Good writing, Gene. (Thanks Otra, for the link).

Time to let FaN have her thread back.
The Breakfast Show is not a place for totalitarianism. Anything and all is encouraged. We like hearing about your newspaper adventures, Gene.
We used to have two newspapers in my small rural town. They had to amalgamate. I miss getting the local news 4X a week. So, now we are down to two issues a week. One is worthy. The other is 90% real-estate listings.

Is Manitoba the Canadian Mississippi? It has its problems. Winnipeg has one of the highest crime rates in Canada.

Thanks FaN.

Here is another good column, leading off with . . .

"Something happened I hadn't anticipated — I got old. I knew it happened to others, but me?"

Nicely written, Gene.

An excellent sad but true recount of today's medicine. Perhaps instead of paying the CEO at Humana 300 million, they could pay the claims so people did not die or go broke over doctor visits.

And forms, while I was on active Navy duty in the late 60s, a form came around to do away with forms, fill it out in six copies and return to Navy BuPers

Well, the case that has mesmerised Canada could be over. The RCMP have found two bodies in the bush of Northern Manitoba. Pending autopsy, they believe they are the bodies of the two young suspects who killed an American, Australian, and Canadian tourist in Northern B.C.

If so, we will never know why these two young kids from Port Alberni, B.C. went on their killing spree. What started out as a quest to "find work in the Yukon" went horribly wrong.

I was just reading that...and noticing in the photos that there would be nothing at first blush that would alarm one about these two.

They were found together, both dead, so it will be interesting to read cause of death in a day or two.

What a crazy, insane world we are living in.

If they are the two killers, at least somehow they expired and saved the Canadians a lot of money for a trial and lawyers and years in a jail.

That's true. We do not have capital punishment in Canada.

The "years in jail" depends on conviction. First-degree murder = 25 years w/o parole. Second degree -- really depends on the circumstances, but from my experience, is 8 - 12 years w/o parole.

If the convicted is deemed a "dangerous offender," the 25-year parole eligibility is waived.

Was "on the road" November 22nd, doing things that I thought were important.

Then the car radio played this.

Those important things weren't so important any more.

Memories...

Thank you, FaN.

I thought about JFK that day, and still vividly remember hearing his assassination announced on loudspeakers at my high school.

I was a freshman in a chemistry lecture hall at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor when the assignation of JFK was announced. Thought we would be at war before day was over. Seems only the good die young and the rotten apples live a long time whilst doing their damage to the world.

Thanks for the post

I was reading at home while in history grad school when I got a phone call about it and turned on the TV. They had rushed JFK to Parkland Hospital and shortly after came the news he was dead. It was a Friday and over the weekend me and my fellow students got together and didn’t know what to say. That this could happen shocked us even though we knew there had been other difficult times in the country’s history. At that time most Americans agreed on where the country was going and that it would get better. After that came Medicare, Medicaid, civil rights, anti-pollution measures and then the reaction. Also more assassinations and then a president had to resign. If a president was shot today, it might seem normal.

Hi Peter. I was surprised that Nov. 22nd came and went, and nothing was mentioned on the media -- at least here in Canada. I think that is because the media boomers have retired. The media generators that followed (and beyond) cannot relate to one of the questions that defines the boomer generation: Where were you when you heard JFK was assassinated?

Hi Maggie. Canadian students were also informed, and dismissed from school that day.

Hi switz. It must have been scarey because we were still in the throes of the Cold War.

Hi Gene. On the Nov. 22nd that just passed, I was thinking, what would it be like, had JFK not been assassinated? That morphed into, what would it be like, had the 1960s not happened? What if we went from the uptight 1950s to the "me" 1970s decade? What a void that would be.

Thank-you for sharing your thoughts and memories.

This is fascinating ongoing thread I just came across...

I remember the day JFK was killed - was living in Detroit at the time (long story) found out when I arrived at the High School I attended (Mackenzie High to be exact) and they sent us home... was a very sad period in US history which compounded with Martin and Bobby. WOW .. this has just brought up so many memories!

I've wondered about that too. If JFK had lived, maybe we would not have had the civil rights laws. He was not strong on that and they seemed to be passed (ironically?) because he had been killed. Johnson turned out to be a much more progressive politician than we had ever seen in him, maybe more so than JFK. If JFK had not been killed, maybe Bobby Kennedy wouldn't have been either. Assassination seemed to become the norm for a while and maybe JFK's made it seem so to the assassins too. Would MLK have been killed if JFK had not?

I don't think we could get rid of the '60's, but if we do, will I be ten years younger?

My child/wife was still in public schools and it was a shock when they announced it over the intercom. She also remembers the Cuban Missile Crisis when kids wondered if they would live another day.

Looking back, it all seemed so calm then. When the current excitement ends, will we miss the chaos?

I was growing up in Florida and only in high school when JFK was killed. Also was only 90 miles from Cuba during the missile crisis. Good thing the Russians blinked first.

It was a rather scary bit of history that I’m glad we all survived. I’m not in favor of re-living that, or my time in the Navy during the Vietnam Mess.

Rumor has it that fully-equipped paratroopers were already positioned on planes, engines running, on the tarmac in Florida, ready to invade Cuba.

Too close for comfort . . .
