Visiting Portland - best campground?

Hi All. We will be visiting Portland for 2-3 days May 21-23.

Any recommendations for a good campground with full hookups near Portland? I am hoping there is somewhere good to stay within a maximum 15-20 minute drive of the city.

Thoughts and experiences to share?

Thanks!

I haven't tried to camp near Portland, since I live here...but I have tried to find options for family when they visit (since they can't legally camp in front of my house). Sadly, there aren't many "good" options that are close to the city.

Jantzen Beach RV Park and Columbia River RV Park are pretty close in proximity to I-205, I will just warn that I-205 has some of the worst traffic in the metro area during rush hour (northbound in evening, southbound in morning).

Clackamette RV Park may be the best bet for "close" to the city, but it is still ~30 minutes to downtown.

If you don't mind a more scenic drive, Oxbow Regional Park is a true gem...but its along slow roads and off the beaten path, but it is really a tranquil place - 40 minutes to downtown

Barton Park in Boring (yes, the Boring from the Everything Sucks TV show) - 40 minutes to downtown.

There are some earlier threads FYI:

https://www.google.com/search?q=port...=airforums.com

including these fairly recent ones:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...-158126-2.html
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f240...ks-153157.html

Have a great trip. Portland is a fine city to visit with lots of good restaurants.

Peter

FYI
FWIW

PS -- Portland's MAX light rail system is great, and might enable camping a little further out than a 15-20 minute drive IMO:

https://trimet.org/max/

Rush hour there is a bear, so taking the train can be a real time-saver.

We always stay at Woodburn RV Park in Woodburn Oregon just off the I5.
Close to train for access to downtown Portland.

My son and I stayed at Champoeg State Park which is 40 minutes south of Portland and drove in and out each day. Don't know if this is too far a drive for you or not but it is a nice park.

We just stayed at Pheasant Ridge in Wilsonville and found it pleasant. TV was good, Wi-Fi was very good by RV park standards. Close to Costco and Target. Their prices are a little high (IMHO) but reflective of their location.

Roamer's Rest in Tualatin is also good. Champoeg State Park is lovely and about 40 minutes out - just don't try it in rush our traffic.

This may be a little further than you want but, Columbia Riverfront RV in Woodland Washington.
Be sure to go to Jakes Crawfish in Portland. Stuffed salmon is killer!

Courtesy Parking

We are members of AS Courtesy Parking and have a farm about 35 minutes from downtown PDX. 50 amp service and water for courtesy parking but no sewer. Clackamette RV Park is 20 minutes toward town from us and had a dump. And about 45 minutes from Salem, site of this year’s international rally.

Although a beautiful park, I wouldn't take a 30'er into Oxbow Park. Maneuvering is tight - the park was built for smaller vehicles and the spaces reflect it.

Looks like the Columbia River RV park is the closest. Reviews vary as to airport noise. May depend on when you are there. The area is nice and traffic compared to other areas is not bad, but it's a hinderance in getting from A to B until the commute gets to work or home for dinner. Our experience on the weekends was that parks over toward the coast were very busy from all the weekend RVers. You needed to be an hour or more North or South to get clear. The Columbia River inland was our preference, but that really in no way meets your need.

Too bad there is not a storage facility or warehouse business that could provide a parking spot. An Air B&B house with a driveway might fit the bill. Good luck with your trip. Sounds like a challenge, but then a lot of trips are. Pat

We live in a suburb of Portland. McIver State Park is a beautiful campground about 20 minutes east of Portland on the Clackamas River. Nice place to hike, play disc golf, and kayak. Beautiful views of Mt Hood on a clear day.

Champoeg State park is a similar distance, but of course I-5 is susceptible to rush hour traffic

Several State Parks in the Columbia Gorge: Oxbow, Viento, Rooster Rock, Benson. A little further away (25-45 minutes) and train traffic at all hours, but the gorge is gorgeous.

To the West Stub Stewart State Park is very nice and you can be back to the western edge of the metro area in 25 minutes or so.

You'll need reservations for any of the nearby state parks on weekends, but midweek shouldn't be a problem.

Hope this is helpful. PM me if you want more info.

As most have already mentioned here, I have nothing else to contribute. BUT, I do owe you a pint or two for helping me decide on that DECKED system, so give me a jingle when you're in town!

So if he has beer for you and is in Hillsboro, I am in Forest Grove with a long drive to level you in with lego blocks and can offer 30 amp service (I have a long enough extension I do believe) water and a septic cleanout that you could dump into via a flojet that we have if you like. Does that mean we all get to make you comfy then we all go for beer? I am in on that deal.....if this direction works for you.

If you do end up in Hillsboro/Forest Grove, then ABV is a good destination for beer. I would go there more if I wouldn't rather beat traffic in getting from the office in Hillsboro back to my house in downtown Portand

We found Roamer's Rest to be acceptable because of its convenient location, despite two things: significant number of long-termers and tight spots (no campfires, no picnic tables). However, the rest rooms / showers were spotless and in great shape. Coin laundry was also good, though I don't remember the price. You could do worse at an RV park, though you could also do better at a state park if any of the previously mentioned locations are convenient for you. Have a great visit!
