Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park

Hi everyone.

I'm planning to spend a week at Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park at the end of June. Any suggestions for things to do - hikes, farmers markets, local farms for local meat, dairy and veggies. Cool places to visit and see?

Thanks,
Charlie

Visit Floyd, VA (about 15 miles). Quaint country store, live music on the weekends. It's your nearest attraction.

Floyd is a must see on Saturday Night, real Blue Grass music.

Several wineries in the area just off Blue Ridge Pkwy with tasting rooms.

Sunset views from there are awesome. The club used to gather for happy hour byob great conversation. Very peaceful and well cared for. stayed there on several occasions.

For a great day hike, do not miss Buffalo Mountain. Highest point in Floyd Co. 360 view.

VHH Stockholder here. There are flyers in the clubhouse for things to do and places to see. More importantly, most stockholders know the places that few others know about. Staying at VHH will be an experience that you will never forget. Everyone there is welcoming and can help with whatever you need. You will love it.

If you like to ride bicycles.....

If you like to ride bicycles, one of our favorite full day trips from VHH area is to the New River Trail State Park. The best access is 60 miles away at New River Trail Gambetta Access near Galax VA. The ride along Chestnut Creek and the New River is wonderful

Ride the New River trail as suggested. Take along a change of clothing for after if it showers. The last time I rode there it was paved in cinders and it rained all day. Maybe it is all paved now? There is a craft market and a outdoor theater for Blue Grass music on the parkway. Well worth a trip. There is a local furniture business in the old roller rink in Floyd that is worth a stop. The owner runs a small sawmill and dry kiln to produce interesting wood slabs. I can not think of the name but there is a good restaurant and winery a ways down the parkway. If you fish you need some local knowledge. The New River is a good bass fishery. There are stocked trout streams in the area. Day trips into Roanoke can be very interesting. There are some interesting local golf courses near the Airstream park. Plan on taking the cart even if you normally walk. The courses are not flat.

Donít miss The Lush Lounge (reserve the bar seats for dinner) in downtown Floyd (across from Hardeeís). A unique, full and welcoming dining experience. Plan your time accordingly.

Nice place with a few members around during mid-week late May of 2021. The few that were there were all very nice and helpful. They don't permit wood or charcoal burning at the individual sites...so if you enjoy a fire...bring a propane burner. They do have a communal fire ring but we didn't use it. There is a partially wooded trail (with hills) on the property. Country roads are hilly (hence the name Highlands) but still good for cycling. The country-state routes can have a narrow or gravel berms. Local town (15 miles away) is nice with a closer "country store" a few miles away. It also doubles for a feed mill. It hasn't seen a coat of paint in 75 years and probably hasn't been swept in as long. I'd say its ok for dry goods (chips, cereal, etc.) and soda pop. I think they had milk, eggs and bread as well. I think they also had a deli counter...but we did not partake.

Things to do near Highland Haven

Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Mabry Mill or north to the visitor center near Roanoke. There are many other sites to see and experience along the parkway - hikes, waterfalls, panoramic vistas.

The Virginia Transportation Museum is in nearby Roanoke. There is also a large reservoir near the city where kayaks can be rented. A farmer's market also is held in the city. Go on the Roanoke tourism website for notices of other activities and special events - festivals, concerts, etc. https://www.visitroanokeva.com/plan/visitor-center/

A nice day trip is to the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA, about 50 miles north. Then go east to Forest, Virginia where Thomas Jefferson's restored getaway home, Poplar Forest, is located. You can buy combination tickets for both attractions at a discount at the D-Day Memorial.
https://www.dday.org
https://www.poplarforest.org

Check out the Floyd Visitors Bureau website as well for activities in Floyd at the time you will be at Highland Haven. There is a visitor's center office in downtown Floyd with information about the local area: https://visitfloydva.com

There is a great little Farmers Market in Floyd on Saturday morning - its very nice and a lot of fun. Floyd is a nice little town, several have mentioned the music, but there are several restaurants worth visiting also...
Roanoke is the largest town nearby to Copper Hill for any serious shopping, and its also a convenient drive.
VHH is a place to go to relax, hike, read and enjoy the breath-taking views!
Have fun.

If you have never been to VHH you should definitely put it on your "to do" list.

Here is a video I found interesting and enjoyable about the creation of VHH Airstream Park.
