It is a lot closer to shore than I would have expected.

Thanks all for the comments on the sub pictures.

They were taken with a fairly long lens so, while it was pretty close to shore, the lens makes it look closer than it actually was, particularly with the dunes in the foreground.

Waiting for / hoping for a sub to pass through the channel is one of the things we love about staying at Fort Clinch SP.

Jim, below is a blow-up (poor word choice) of the only picture showing hull numbers. Do these mean anything to you? And is that Sean Connery at the helm? : )

Hull numbers

The hull numbers are on the sail when they have them showing. The numbers by the water-line are number of feet that the sub is under water. The boat I was on long ago was 30 feet in diameter and on the surface you only saw 10-15 feet above the waterline . I didn't read everything but where was this taken? I was home ported out of Norfolk, VA.

What BScott said. The hull number would normally be just below where Sean and the boys are siting toward the top of the sail. I was looking around on the internet at pictures of current boats and I didn't see many with hull numbers painted on them. Maybe they have been removed for obvious operational security reasons.

That boat is either an early model Los Angeles class fast attack sub or a boomer, just can't tell from angle the picture was taken. Smooth sailing boys and girls!!

No hull number to save weight. Helps in fuel economy and saves on labor by not have them painted on since no one can see them underwater. In reality, it's an OPSEC issue

Why do so many of the pix not come up on my iPhone or iPad? I have a broken pic symbol instead.

Here it is. I am in the cold, wind and snow of Minnesota. My loverly Airstream is in the cold and wind of Far West Texas, where she patiently awaits me. I am less patient about the deal.

Been boondocking for about a week here just outside of Joshua Tree National Park. Heading over to Anza Borrego next for the holidays.

Watch that first 1.5 miles of Hwy S22 after turning off Hwy 86 at Salton City. It's in pretty rough shape...all moguls.

Bold. That site you tagged is now state park with all the state park rules. In addition, much of that area is off limits to camping, about an 80% reduction. Bummer. You may be packed in there for the holidays.

Well at least it's packed with 7 other Airstreams, with more friends on the way.
