Vacation in Arizona

Hi, we are trying to plan a trip to Arizona during the second week of October. I have a daughter in Phoenix and a brother in Payson and I am trying to find nice campgrounds somewhere close to or inbetween these two cities. We will want full hook-ups. We may want to stay near Phoenix first then move closer to Payson next. Any locals or persons with experience camping at or near these cities, we would like to hear from you with your recommendations or places to steer clear of. THANK YOU.

Bob,
Where in Phoenix are you going? It's a big city. Are you looking for a campground or RV Park or do you not have a preference?

Mogollon Rim north of Payson

Hi Bob.

North of Payson you will see the Mogollon Rim. Plenty of National Forest camping, but you will be Rockdocking on Forest Service dirt roads to the East of Highway 87. You can also camp near the edge of the rim and see Payson in the distance. I have a 23 footer and the major dirt roads you will have no trouble. Avoid... short cuts. Stay on the main road versus the two track side roads. No water. No electricity. No hookups. No nothing...

One warning. Payson is a tough place to get water if you want to top out the trailer. The road coming to town from the west to Payson, is one humdinger. Steep grade and curves.

Bob,
Phoenix is a majot city and travel can be difficult at certain times of the day. There are many RV parks located around the edge of the city that fill up quickly in the winter months. You should have no problem finding one in the time period you are looking for. I would suggest looking for something close to the area you choose to visit.

There is little or nothing located between Phoenix and Payson. It's an hour and one half of great views and little more. The city of Payson has several parks that would suit your needs. I mostly camp "on the rim" with no hookups, not what you are really looing for.

Another area that might work would be the Verde Valley. It would put you about an hour from each of the two areas. The weater sould be warm 80 - 50 in mid October.
