US Route 1 From Ellsworth Maine to Calais Maine

Taking a trip in a few weeks from Connecticut TO PEI in Canada. We will be staying in Camden Maine for a few days and then up to New Brunswick. We are wondering if anyone has driven on Route 1 from the Ellsworth area all the way to Calais via Machias? We will be towing a 28' Airstream and wanted to be sure we not wasting our time thinking of taking this route. Interested in information as to road width and if it gets too narrow, traffic congestion etc. Any advise and/or information will be greatly appreciated.

I live in Searsport, ME on US Rt. 1 about 20 miles north of Camden. It's been a long time since I drove the stretch you're asking about, but traffic and road conditions will not be a problem. I'll be going that way the 3rd week of August as my wife and I plan to spend 2 weeks in NB, NS, and PEI. If you want a nice place to camp on that stretch in northern Maine before you cross into Canada check out Cobscook Bay State Park.

Did it a few years ago with our 30'er. No problems at all. Enjoy the ride.

In Machias seafood and blueberry pie at Helen's. On the right heading east out of town. There is parking you can back your trailer into on the east side of Helen's next to the launch ramp.

That time of year you may be able to get the fresh blueberry pie...really good.

Ellsworth to PEI

We live in Lubec,ME & just back from Fundy NP & PEI. Basically roads are fine. Camped @ Fundy both ways as love the hikes, 40 ft tides, people & history. PEI we camped Jacque Cartier on N.Cape & PEI NP @ Cavendish. Wonderfull coast, live music & seafood of course: mussels @ oysters. Also go to Greenwich another part of PEI NP: well worth hike to dunes on floating walks & interpretive center. PEI is a special place & US $ goes far in Canada these moments. Lastly as going up toward Calais take rt 214 as avoids Calais & great border access. If questions please holler. Of Campobello Island is wonderful international park & sweet camping @ Herring Cove. Good luck,

David Gage
