Truck hit at campground
Writing here for sympathy.
My wife and I were completing dinner at our campground campsite. I saw outside the window a large fifth wheel heading out of the campground in hast. I made a comment to my wife that it was strange for them to be leaving at 7pm. A couple of seconds later, we heard a loud noise.
We are in the first site along the row. The fifth wheel cut the corner and clipped my parked F250 bumper, tailgate, and taillight.
The older couple is new to towing. They were embarrassed and very apologetic. I feel bad for them.
Looks like our travel season will be coming to an end this weekend. I had plans for a fall fishing trip but truck is heading to the shop.

I hate to hear things like that, but stuff happens. Truck damage is far better than personal injury. I’m sure the couple did feel badly. Hope all works out and you get back on the road sooner than later. Take care

Probably a lesson to be learned here for us who can benefit from your experience. Make sure the truck is a good distance from the roadway where campers will be going through.
Sorry for the hassle and the changed plans. Bummer

If you had a 1/2 ton truck, they might have missed it. Bigger is not always better...
Sorry about the accident, the truck can be fixed. No one was hurt.

You can RENT a tow vehicle and probably get the other party to pay for it. Try Penske or other COMMERCIAL truck rental companies, Avis, Budget and others who cater to individuals will shy away from towing.
Alternately, get it street legal with working.lights and safe brakes... then have the rest fixed after first snowfall.

Sorry about the accident. Just a head’s up- after your truck is fixed it will have been depreciated as a result of the accident for which you should be compensated. Whenever you sell of trade the truck, a title search will reveal that it was in an accident, thus lowering the value.

I suppose If there is anything for all of us to learn from this unfortunate event it might be when we are camping in a spot on an inside corner, try to park so a passerby has extra room in case they cut the corner.

Actually, I find it hard to believe that more of this hasn't happened. In the years we have been camping at private campgrounds I have seen more sites added, more crowding within those sites, and less room for tow vehicles or "toads" for the Class A crowd.

What a bummer, and huge inconvenience to you.
I, too, have found myself in a few campgrounds over the years that had so maximized squeezing campsites into every available inch that it’s a wonder accidents didn’t occur daily.
A second vote for a rental for the duration, paid for by the other side.

Over the years I have been in a handful of tight campgrounds where I was concerned about the nose of the truck or the end of the trailer. I used those LED pucks to light those edges just as an extra measure of safety. But yes, there are many new RV'ers on the road today, gotta take more defensive measures.

Just went through that last year. Insurance company will make it dang near impossible to prove reduced value. You have to be persistent and document everything. it is on you to visit several dealers and compile a file on value prior to accident and projected loss due to accident reveal at trade in/sale time.
Bottom line, we prevailed but not without a lot of hassle and finally a letter from the family lawyer stating our case. Stick to your guns and make them compensate you for the new lower value of your truck. Insurance companies suck!

Don’t trust the insurance company to provide equivalent, or even safe, repairs. When my truck was rear ended, a major company tried to install a class III hitch, instead of class IV. I only caught because the wife observed that the welds looked cheap. I crawled under with a flashlight and read the stamped on rating.
I had to pay the difference to get a Ford bumper, after their contact people tied me up for hours arguing about the $150 amount.
Don’t get me started on the medical claim...

Thanks for the responses. I had not considered the reduced resale value. More guidance here is much appreciated. I’ve taken extremely great care of this truck. Most can’t believe the age both cosmetically and low mileage.
As for my campsite, actually we’re not on a typical inside corner. The fifth wheel didn’t like their original placement. From what I can gather, out of frustration, he took the departing route and then tried a hard turn to re-enter the campground. Being clouded by the situation (newbie, tired, dark, and frustrations), he hastily took a turn that was neither intended nor designed for such a turn.

This is the damage to our vehicle. Note it is the far corner of my truck...away from the turn.

Is the 1/2 ton truck comment supposed to be an inside joke or something?

I took the reference to a F150 as a tongue in cheek comment.
Not sure if my previous picture showing the alignment loaded correctly. You can see how the fifth wheel tracked. The mud is from them missing the concrete pad and hitting a tree before coming to clip my truck.

A 150 and a 250 are the same size overall.
I guess my advice is different. Maybe fix the tail light so it works and go on your planned trip and then put the truck in the shop. Try not to let a small mishap reshape your plans.
It looks like it is easily reparable. It does take some time with the paint.

Being that far off track they would have probably hit a Mini Cooper!
