For the Labrador ferry, if over 60 yo, you are a senior. So for truck, trailer, senior driver, senior passenger, and of course Jake (no charge), cost one way was about $42 CA.

There are full hookups at Northern Light motel, campground is across the road, about 10-15 sites. Elec, water, sewer all worked great...not the prettiest campground, but we where happy. Good bathhouse if you choose that and we used the laundry in the hotel.

We found the restaurant food in Newfoundland to be quite good.

Thanks for the ferry info. Eleven years ago NF had a reputation for bad diets and things like cod cheeks and bologna being on menus (bologna on a mixed grill?). Seal flipper pie apparently is not as common as it once was, but we did see it on a few menus. Maybe things are changing. When we first went to Alaska in 2002, it was difficult to get a salad, but by 2010 it had changed a lot.

Went up to Meat Cove today. With great deference to Jim...glad we did not take the trailer. It was not the pull up there , but the campground. There were tent campers everywhere, no trailers, RV's. There were two sites we might have been able to get into, but in Army terms, there were "pup" tents in those spots. Even that we could overcome....but it was the flies and mosquitos, rivaled anything we saw in Alaska or Labrador....So, to Jim, my hats off to you....but we just can't join that Meat Cove Club!!!. Great views...if you close your eyes you can imagine how it was back in the day... In the U.S., they were called buffalo jumps.

Ha ha so Meat Cove has been found. I think this must be "pilgrimage weekend". I was there around Canadian Thanksgiving and we had the place to ourselves. Good for a story though that will no doubt be embellished over the course of time. Good going. Jim

Yes Gene the food can be good or not so, all depends on where you go and what you like. Really no different than anywhere else, although the Seafood will be fresh (if you are so inclined). I hope Road Trips will have a distinctive Newfoundland flavor next year! Hope to see you here.

Coming back from Salmon fishing last week I passed a fellow in a 3500 GMC with a hugh truck camper towing what looked to be a 28' International, closely followed by his wife (I assume) driving a car. Anyone know who this is and if they are on the forum?

I do remember a really good meal at a Chinese restaurant in St. Johns across from the harbor. Barb remembers trying cod cheeks in St. Barbe and will not make that mistake again. Not sure cod have cheeks anyway and wonder what it really was. We'll be discussing next year's plans all winter. It is the 3,500 miles to the ferry in NS that is the big ugly wall between us—interstates are fast, but the number of miles, boredom and the traffic are what makes that part of the trip a burden. It costs a lot too and a stock market rally would be a good thing.

That would be the Magic Wok. It's been downtown for years. On Sunday they serve traditional Chinese food which by the number of Chinese descendants and immigrants in the restaurant must be fairly good.

Yes the cod cheeks actually are cheeks. Somewhat meatier than the tongue. I know it sounds gross but probably no more so than any other place's local delicacy.

DMT, you'll have to go back in my thread and see what was posted about NS. We spent close to three weeks there before we went to NL. We just spent the last week touring Cape Breton. Still happy to answer any questions.

We are now in PEI at Souris...not sure where next. Looking for some chocolate potato cake, chocolate covered potato chips--- Cow Pies, and potato fudge. Yes I am a sophisticated eater.

No wonder you thought the food in NF was good. We have a lot of cow pies in Colorado and they are free for the taking. I love chocolate, but with potatoes? I have tested chocolate and beer, and they do go together.

After PEI, where to? If you take your time, you will be able to follow the leaves changing from NB to home.

Gene, sorry, actually they are called Cow Chips....gone the same reaction from the waitress as you had!

We will be in PEI until thisnFriday, Sep 11, then going to Fundy/Alma....anybody have any campground recommendations for that area?

I have stayed on the wharf in Pictou. No picnic table. But the Hector is there and a really good museum. No pie but a decent pub. Jim

John we stayed at Ponderosa Pines Campgrounds NE of Alma. It is on the Fundy Coast. There are Provincal Parks at Alma but I would avoid going south of town. We went through there in mid Aug. while traveling north to Alma. The road was under construction and was in terrible condition, I doubt that it is much better now.

Is it better to stay up near Hopewell Rocks or in Fundy NP?

Now I get it. Alma, New Brunswick, not Alma, Nova Scotia. Great fish chowder in St. Martins, Rockwood Park for camping in Saint John and Kiwanis Oceanfront Camping in Saint Andrews.
Alma, NS came to mind because I currently have a labour force near there at a Pulp and Paper mill.

We have also hit our share of rough roads. Have encountered plenty of road construction as well. Most areas were timed delays or lane shifts for paving. The road south of Alma,NB was terrible. They were cutting the grade substantially in both lanes at the same time, steep grades and loose rock and stone everywhere. Avoid this area.

Our stay in PEI. Camped at Red Point PP, St Peter Campground in St Peter's Bay, and Marco Polo Campground at Cavendish. All three campgrounds were good. Souris, St Peter's Bay and Cavendish are all neat towns. Cavendish could be real touristy if there before Labor Day. We caught a Ceilidh at Stanley Bridge, walked the beaches and had a good time. Spent a day in Charlottetown and enjoyed a great lunch at Merchat Man Pub. Got my cow chips at "Cows". Roads were all pretty good, fuel about the same as NS. It was a great visit.

Just checking the weather before I set off on my bike and I see that Saint John has made the national news due to the downpour that you are getting. Should keep the crowds away from Saint Andrews. Jim
