Trip Planning Advice

Barbara and I plan to spend about three weeks next month driving up to the Outer Banks region of NC and then returning home (Milton, Florida). We plan to work our way up and back in the Eastern third of Georgia and the Carolinas. I am seeking information on Federal, State, county and commercial (private) parks to use for the AS. Cost is not the concern. What I really wish to know is the type of facilities, road conditions, your experiance, etc. We generally prefer good county roads and US highways, but do also use Interstate Highways.

Any and all input will be appreciated.

If you come up Rt 17 from Myrtle Beach to Southport NC you can take the ferry across Cape Fear river to Ft Fisher. Great aquarium there and a Museum. Camping avail 10mi north at Carolina Beach State park. Be aware this is a "wilderness" campground. No water at individual sites and only a dump station. Wilmington is 15mi North and the Battleship North Carolina is there to tour. If you follow coast to Cedar Island you can hop another ferry to Okcakroke on the outer banks and wander up Rt 12 to Nags Head (Wright Bros museum). The trick using the ferry is making a reservation (1-800-BY-Ferry) in advance and tell them the lenght of your TV & AS. Summertime is very busy at the coast. There are several private and Federal campgrounds on the Outerbanks. Search camping at outerbanks.

You should have a great trip.

If it is in the right place for a stopover, Laura Walker state park in GA is a very nice campground. Good place to do the swamp from in that interests you. We camped at Rodanthe in the outer banks. nice private campground. the big campground in myrtle beach (ocean shores?) is a pretty good place.

Here are two books that I invested in: RV bookstore - the world's largest online RV bookstore
RV bookstore - the world's largest online RV bookstore

The info can obviously be found elsewhere online, but in paperback form it is handy and concise.
