Travels this Year

At the end of each year, I try to look back and reflect on my travels during the past year. I work and have young kids so I have to fit travels in around holidays to the extent possible but my goal is to try to have at least one trip a month. This year I made 10 out of the 12 months. Here are our trips:

January: Topsail State Park (Destin, Florida) – Airforums Canopener Rally

February: O’Lena State Park, High Springs, Florida and Bill Fredrick Park at Turkey Lake, Orlando (with visits to Seaworld and Disney World)

Blakeley State Park, Spanish Fort, Alabama

April: St. Andrews State Park, Panama City, Florida for a Tin Can Tourist Rally

May: Buccanner State Park, Waveland, Mississippi

June: Gulf Island National Seashore - Ft. Pickens, Pensacola Beach, Florida

July: Bolding Mill COE campground, Lake Lanier, Georgia, Vogel State Park (GA) Ft. Mountain State Park (GA), Cloudland Canyon (GA), Chattanooga (Camping World campground)

September: Topsail State Park, Destin, Florida

October: Picked up 1986 Avion 34W in Columbia, Missouri with return stop in Sikeston, Mo.

November: Perry Florida KOA, Collier Seminole State Park, Naples, Florida, Curry Hammock State Park, Marathon, Florida, Cypress Campground, Winter Haven, Florida (visited Legoland)

This adds up to about 6000 miles and 30 days on the road. I look forward to returning to some favorite spots in 2017 and discovering some new places. I invite other forum members to share their travels this year. It will give us all some good ideas and inspiration.

January – Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park enroute to and returning from Canopener 2016 in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. This is a great rally in a nice facility with great support from the park!

February – High Falls State Park, GA; Courtesy Parking in Cincinnati, OH; La Quinta Inn in Columbus, OH while trading our 2001 Safari 25 for our 2002 Classic 30 Slideout at Haydocy Airstream; Whispering Hills RV Park, Georgetown, KY; Best Holiday Travel Park, Chattanooga, TN; Reed Bingham State Park, Adel GA on the way home.

March – New trailer parked in our driveway while we make repairs and upgrades and move in all the stuff we didn’t take to Ohio.
WBCCI Cajun Country Caravan 2016 including stops at Yogi Bear Jellystone Park, Madison, FL, Frenchman’s Wilderness Campground, Breaux Bridge as a base for exploring Baton Rouge to see the old and new Capitol Buildings, the Governor’s Mansion, the LSU Rural Life Museum; KOC Campground, New Iberia, LA where we visited the McIlhenny Tabasco Plant on Avery Island, the Acadian Culture Center and Acadian Village in Lafayette; Abbeville where we had breakfast with the Town Council and learned about the history and economics of the area; and held a baby alligator; St. Martinville where we saw the Evangeline Oak, Eunice, LA where I attended the Crawfish Etoufee Cookoff (dat’s good yeah), Bayou Wilderness RV Resort in Carencro, and Pelican Palms RV Resort, Milton, FL and Pecan Park RV Park in Jacksonville, FL on the way home. We had a great time thanks to our wonderful hosts and caravan leaders, Larry and Judy Boudreaux. This rally is a must do if you are a WBCCI member!

April - One week after returning from LA we headed for the WBCCI All Florida Rally at Sunshine Key Resort on Ohio Key, FL where I tried our new inflatable kayak with mixed results. We stopped at the Davie KOA on the way home where we encountered low voltage and had to move to another site.

May – WBCCI Unit 27 Rally in Silver Springs, FL where we stayed at the Wilderness RV Resort and toured Silver Springs.

August – Old Fiddler’s Convention Rally in Galax, VA with stops at Blythe County Regional Park, Brunswick, GA; Crown Cove RV “Resort” in Charlotte, NC; Cool Breeze Campground in Galax where we had Bluegrass music every afternoon and evening after the convention. From there we spent several nights at Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park on the way home with stops at West Jefferson, NC, and Camp Lake Jasper in Hardeeville, SC.

September – Rally at Blueberry Hill RV Resort in Bushnell, FL where we toured the Dade Battlefield Historic State Park. No more Florida rallies in September. Too hot to do much of anything!

And finally,

November – The southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, starting at the Cracker Barrel RV parking on JT Butler Blvd in Jacksonville (two sites we tried at Hanna Park were unusable), Twin Oaks RV Park in Elko, GA (great customer service), Great Outdoors RV Resort in Franklin, NC (great view and nice facility), the relocated (thanks to Hurricane Matthew) Hunting Island Hiatus Rally at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC (a great group and nice park in the woods but close to I-77) and then an oceanfront site at Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach FL where we toured the fort and old Fernandina Beach before heading home.

Just over 9500 miles and 66 nights in the trailers. Looking forward to 2017.

Al
