Thanks Jeff! May plan would be to remove the batteries and store them in the TV, and obviously cover the bikes so that they don’t get damaged and filthy from the road trips.

Smile The best solution is...

Buy an Eddie Bauer or other Airstream with the rear hatch. The Eddie’s come with couches that fold up to give you plenty of room for multiple bikes, plus tie-down brackets to keep the bikes upright while underway.

Ok, back to other solutions...

My RadCity e-bike is 65 lbs with the battery in. My solution is inside storage in my van. While this picture doesn't show the e-bike, it is the method I use and is suitable for both van's and pickup trucks.

We do the same with our two RadMinis in the bed of our Tundra.

Just now noticed you were from Houston, MO! I’m sure you are stopping by Piney River Brewery and getting some “Float Trip” brew for your trip. We have a very good friend from Houston.

Rucos, you posted, "I made this Aluminum rack and mounted a front hitch on the truck...it has worked great I usually remove the seat...battery and protect the controls if we are traveling any distance. It also has a shakle lock that secures the front wheel to the rack and the bike cross bar is also locked and secured to the rake so it is virtually impossible to remove without a cuttiing wheel. I have about 6-7000mi on it so far...no issues," but there is no picture to go with it; would you please resend it? Thanks!!

HI, after examining all sorts of options for our e-bikes, we feel that the way you have done it is the way to go for us. We do not have quick release front wheels so we are opting for a taller truck cap. Our bikes are 45" tall, plus the height of the slide out -- figure that puts it at about 50 - 55" for the door clearance. We have a 2012 Chevy Silverado HD 4WD, Crew Cab, LTZ, Duramax Diesel with a 6' 6" bed. Any tips suggestions on the type of slide out to get and also the bike rack itself? Also, could you pls tell me what type and model of truck cap you have?

This fork mount plate worked well on our first trip with bikes, foam rubber underneath protected the floor, some straps help the bikes in place.

This is also a question of ours. The Yakima set up over the bed cover, is this universal or do you need a specific cover?

The cover we use "TruckcoversUSA", has the Yakima base integrated into the cover hardware. I believe that Yakima has a mount system that attaches to the truck they call it the "bedrock".

Before you invest in the Yakima system and perhaps the Retrax cover, I suggest you watch the LoLoHo video on their E-bikes and this system.
(They quit using it)

Mollysdad, thanks for sharing the LoLoHo video. Do you know what they’re using to transport their e-bikes now?

That’s a shame the skewer mount broke the fork on her bike. I suspect the skewer wasn’t tight enough which caused excessive movement and eventually the end of the fork failed.

We’ve had Yakima rail systems for 20+ years, even a tandem bike mount on top of a Chevy Astro van. That was fun to get up there! I took the mounts off the crossbars and made a wood “I” frame out of 2x6 and some pipe to hold the skewer mounts. It fits inside the Airstream with two bikes opposed front to rear. It works but requires some gymnastics to get the bikes on it inside the trailer.

What about rain/salt/sand/dust? That's my concern as a long trip solution. I think the answer unfortunately is to place them in the trailer. Plus, I can construct an in-the-trailer solution for less than $2,000

I have a hatch so loading is easier but this could work in a 25 fb or 27 without a hatch. Its a piece of plywood with 2 fork locks and two velcro straps to hold down the rear wheels. I stuff between the bikes and seat bases and between the bikes. nothing moved during transport.sorry photo is a vertical on my computer Click image for larger version

Prostar, I envy you with that rear hatch! It would make it much easier to load bikes into the trailer.

Here’s the wood frame I made and re-tasked Yakima mounts. Sorry for the poor photo but it’s the only one I have. The setup fits in the aisle of the trailer between our twin beds. I put rubber mat on the bottom of the wood; everything stays put.

Our problem now is the DW has a folding recumbent trike. It’s a tight fit getting it through the door. She’s going to try riding a Specialized Como e-bike this spring so that would make transporting easier.

I travel solo so only need one bike. I store my 37-pound, folding Evelo e-bike in the truck bed. It fits, with room to spare, beneath my hard tonneau cover. I keep it at the front right corner of the bed on an old quilt. That way, I can slide it out and lift it down. It has worked out very well. And I love the bike. It has a range of 40 miles.

Just a clarification, Yakima has a bike holder that mounts with the front tire on. No skewer.

I love the LoLoHo team. The mount that they used is different from the "HighRoad" mount. Undoubtedly, all of these systems and mods have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Stay Safe
