Tornado scare, need better local info while traveling

I passed through El Reno, OK last week at the time the tornado had touched down on a solo trip from Boston to Phoenix and had a scare on I40, I had to exit the highway the seek shelter. The rest of the trip was pretty eventful as well, many thunderstorms, very bad winds in New Mexico, ice in Flagstaff...many wrecked cars and RVs. I will never forget that trip.

So now I am considering a CB radio and/or a weather radio. Does anybody have any experience with this stuff? Do you have a CB? is it helpful or should I go more high tech with a app or something. I don't even know if truckers use CBs anymore.

Thanks for any help.

I like the NOAA Hi Def Radar Pro app, which shows your exact location with respect to any storm, and will issue a sounded alert if you need to take shelter.

I also still carry an old school battery operated NOAA weather radio. Been without cell or internet too often.
While.driving , OnStar send weather warnings to the dashboard display.

Looks like CBs are kind of old technology, I guess truckers are using more apps and such. I downloaded the Waze app that looks very promising.

I’ll check out the weather apps, thanks

There was a recent similar thread with some good links for watching live radar at various degrees of zoom. You can watch dangerous weather cells come at or miss you.

In addition to Apps like Maggie’s NOAA suggestion, Accuweather has good moving radar coverage all over the US. For instance:

NE: https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/no.../weather-radar
CT/MA: https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/co.../weather-radar

Good luck,

Peter

The CB is still something which is very useful. The truckers put out a lot of great information about road conditions. In bad weather I like listen to local stations instead of satellite stations. Always know the County
you in and surrounding one's. When weather alerts are mentioned they name the Counties. This way you know where is moving. If I stay over night where severe weather is expected I call the local law enforcement an get the location of the location of storm shelters an that's were I'm going to park. In Oklahoma most small towns have these shelters. I do not like tornado States. Just ask my wife. I carry plenty of flas lights and batteries.
