I had my roof done about 10 years ago, shake to standing rib steel. I did about 30 squares and had bids as high as $25000. I priced the material for DIY and it was around $3000. Found a local outfit did the job for $5900. When I questioned the high dollar guys to justify their numbers in relation to the material cost, some got very creative while others just got indignant and left.
Look around and do your homework. The gullible can really get taken for an expensive ride.

well, the more i get semi educated
the confuser i become  ,,
i have two island contractor bids now and will have the third ,....tomorrow
there is a significant measurement deficiency between the two of about 12 squares: 
but both are about 10$ a square foot 
i called a roofer in anacordes, he is coming over next week...but he estimated about 6$ per square foot::
so at this point i don't know whether to stand there or run: neutral: 
suspect the mainlanders will make the islander look like bandits

Start talking about how long it will take and how many men. It's easy to get a materials cost from a couple of suppliers. Subtract materials from total bid and with the installation hours figure the cost per hour. That will be the scary figure. You should be able to get general installation times from the roofing suppler. You can also find how much construction workers make in the area. The profit some of these outfits want to make is unbelievable.

Now the Orcas Island Adventure really begins
they say it's the journey that is the objective rather than the destination..
and airstreaming is all about the journey....the destination was always an excuse to hitch up the dream wagon....and look for el dorado...the shining spot on the hill.....
the very excitement is the road....the travel....the sights seen along the way....wandering in wonder....each destination is in and of its self...a jewel of jewels among various routes of travel.....
and then you get hooked....a final destination compels...beckons....and a dream comes true.....
Orcas Island....
we made it...after three houses under contract....the fourth one took...as they say.
we will close on or before march 3.... on a 10 acre park like setting..a mile or so in.. at the end of a dead end private road....
all the solace and privacy one could dream of....with a view that goes forever...
so it was about a 200,000 mile airstream journey that spaned 5 years and a circle around most of the states and then like going down the drain we focused on oregon/washington and then by magic...

Nice! You have a lot of madrone (a) trees there. They are special, don't burn that wood if it comes down for some reason, use it, it's beautiful and those trees are on the decline. Arbutus menziesii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

our fingers are surely crossed
deal is done as can be at this point...
next step is bank appraisal...just time...no sweat  ..all parties desire a swift closing.....so....sometime in the next 20 or so days....
yes the madrone trees are enchanting and beautiful...a drought resistant species that is more prevalent on the west side (the gold coast)..
it is amazing that ...here on the island...the trees have to root on top of the ground as it i all rock and wet...trees run their roots on top of the ground an into rock crevices...the madrones more so ....and thrive in drier climates...
there have been many cut off the property as there is a stack of firewood size that is very old...
there are a couple that don't look healthy....
the picture of the driveway...as it relates to airstreams...is well deceiving....   
getting to the property is not bad...by island standards that is...
as the road enters this property it starts an incline and then two fairly tight
S curves continuing to the end where it splits ..to the right...a neighbor...the left enters my driveway that first comes to the entrance of the guest house ....and a shelter where there is 30 amp electrical service....
great you say....well...i still am eyeing whether i want to try to put a 28 ft where it needs to go...
an INTERSTATE....may be in my future?????????
