The OK State
Sketching out a Big West trip, aiming for South Dakota's Black Hills, and right now the rough plan has us staying at a park in Arkansas, then heading ... not sure where, but looks like Oklahoma, maybe.
We'd be coming in on Interstate 40.
Been to the Oklahoma briefly, 30-plus years ago. All I can remember is some cattle and oil wells.
So, is there anything to see or do in OK?
Any parks stand out?

Hit Tulsa and the Route 66 museums, Tulsa Art shows, Woolorock in Bartlesville is former estate of John Phillips, founder of Phillips Oil and Gas, and is largest collection on the Wild West and Native Americans. Go see the Tulsa Zoo. largest and best Zoo in Oklahoma.

East OKC KOA in Choctaw. It is quiet, but not too high end.
The Twin Fountains is a gated park in North OKC if that is more to your liking.
The Cowboy Hall of Fame is worth a look if you like rodeo stars, history, and art. North side of OKC.
There is a KOA in North Littlerock Arkansas that is nice. EDIT - Clinton Library down town and interesting RV park across the river from it.
Grape Country RV, 7806 Hwy186, Altus, Arkansas - gravel lot, not a winery, quiet, not expensive, self service and not too far off I40. Nice owner. Look for it on RV Parky. There are wineries in the area.
EDIT - if you do go North to Tulsa, Rogers Arkansas has the Russel Knife factory and it's worth a visit. They have closeout if low cost is of value. Also a COE campground on Beaver lake.
Travel safe. Pat

Big state! We stayed at Foss SP between Clinton and Elk City, to accommodate a visit to Black Kettle Grassland and Washita Bluff. Very historic, in kind of a spiritual way (Native American). There’s a nice private campground in Weatherford.
Be careful in Oklahoma City - the expressway is about as RV unfriendly as Kansas City. We nearly got taken out by a flatbed of steel that drifted/swung/flew into our lane on a curve during a rainstorm.
Happy travels!

Near El Reno see Fort Reno, lots of history from the Indian Wars, WW1 remount station, WW2 same, the fort was a prison of war camp during WW2. In town see Rock Island Rail Road Museum. Stay in City RV park at lake Reno some sites are full some are not, travel on parts of R 66 eat a what they call onion hamburger at Johnny in town on R66. See cross roads of America R 81 north south and R 66 east west meet there.

Now, the Route 66 museum has got to be fun.
Woolorock, I’d never heard of that. Sounds interesting. Thanks.

Onion hamburger! I know my wife would take a pass ... while I might order two.
Never been to a railroad museum — may have to fix that in El Reno.
Thanks for the ideas.

I lived briefly outside Manhattan, Kansas, years ago, and there was a national grassland there. Surprisingly interesting?
What is Washita Bluff? I’m looking at that on the map, and it is not far off our tentative route.

We moved to OKC in 1996 and stayed three years.
When we visited OKC to scope out the new job we saw the green grass where the Murrah building was and the mementos attached to the chain link fence and the survivor tree. Moving tributes left by visitors from all over. Then later we visited again while it was unfinished.
It merits a visit.
Might want to see what’s going on in Guthrie too.
We enjoyed our time in OK and had a nice tent camp at Tenkiller Lake.

The greatest rail road museum is in Sacramento CA. If you go think about the whole day. Lots of history and big iron. Yes that’s not on your trip this year but maybe next time out. Also in Union ILL. Northwest of Chicago. Live stream engines, electric engines, plus some that you can ride on.

Pioneer woman mercantile
Pawhuska, OK. Pioneer woman museum in Ponca City, Phillips 66 museum in Bartlesville. Oklahoma state university in Stillwater. There are excellent state parks located in that area north of OK City.

Thanks. Pawhuska (great name!) and Bartlesville are right off the tentative route.
Pioneer woman and oil — each could be an interesting stop.
