The mattress in our 23D

We have been full timing in our 2016 Flying Cloud 23D for 5 months now.

My wife and I love the trailer and our new retired lifestyle. But the stock mattress seems to have "rutted" out, especially on my side of the bed. The foam doesn't seem to revert to fully expanded at all.

I'm only 180 lbs so I don't think I'm overloading it at all. We just don't feel that there should be any "decay" in the Mattress after just 5 months of use.

Here are my questions;

1). Has anyone of you experienced the same thing?

2). Do you think there is a warranty issue here?

3). Has anyone purchased a new mattress from the Airstream store? If so what thickness did you buy and do you feel that the new mattress is of a better quality that the stock one?

We have come close to ordering a new 8 1/2" thick mattress at about $700. But buying one without even touching it is not without the obvious gamble.

Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

We experienced the same on our 23 footer with the corner bed after a couple years. We found a company that used our existing mattress as a template and made us a new one that was far super to the factory installed one and was to the firmness we wanted. The cost wasn't much more than a factory replacement.

Contact Airstream for the bed dimensions and then contact MattressInsider and Rocky Mtn Mattress for price quotes. I went with MattressInsider for our queen to twin bed conversion on our Classic 25fb.

I also have a 2016 that I took delivery of in April of this year. The mattress is flimsy and not as good as my previous 2015 model.
While at the dealer in Fairfield last week, I noticed the new 2017's had firmer mattresses. I just ordered replacements for the twins @ $625 each. The parts guy at the dealer also referred me to the foam store in Berkeley. I spoke with them and they do custom mattresses all the time. Also a custom foam store in Fort Bragg that I've heard about. Lastly..at the dealer they have a new mattress display where you can touch and look at the different options, then order through another company.
I would definitely try to get that covered under warranty.
Good luck!

We used our Airstream mattress with a foam topper maybe 600 nights (half-time) before putting in a Sleep Number mattress. It was actually in pretty good shape. You could try the warranty route, and sometimes Factory Customer Service will consider reasonable requests outside of warranty as "Good Will".

Just a heads up, there's a note in your Owners Manual advising Airstreams are designed for recreational use, not full time. A difficult dealership (like ours) could use this to deny something, but I think the note is intended to apply to damage from long term condensation damage.

We ordered a memory foam full size 10" mattress from Wally World (Walmart).Un-wrap the gauze covering,trace-out the old mattress shape, then use an electric carving knife from the kitchen to cut it.Re-wrap the gauze and cover it with an AB (Airstream bed covering maker) bed protector. After 4 years,it's still firm.

I agree with the need to touch, feel and lay on a mattress solution before purchase.

My wife really disliked the memory foam feel of the mattress in our new 2017 but it went straight from the dealer into storage for the winter so we will give it a few trips to see if we need to replace it.

If we do, this is a company that we will take a road trip into Wisconsin to try out their products first hand:

Nice folks over the phone and they have no problem with RV sized special orders.

Get Select Comfort size small queen. I own
4 already. You might catch them on sale at
Camping World with Good San card for a
good price, less than $900. I had one for
20 years.

We have a king select comfort at home so I ordered twins that fit in the mattress spot and found an air control pump so the wife has one pressure setting and I have mine. We have 2 large singles on each side of the bedroom. The rest of your day depends on the rest you get at night.

The standard for acceptable compression in a new mattress varies from 1 to 1 1/2 inches before it may be considered a warranty issue. I'm surprised it has taken a set soon.
My suggestion is to visit a foam store where they have various grades of foam mattresses to try.
I replaced the mattress in my old 25 Excella with a standard 8 inch foam mattress that is serving very well, and for under $400 Canadian. I cut the curve with a sharp Butcher Knife. Others have used electric carving knives

All good ideas, but the 23D is one of those strange sizes that has the radius corner. It's not a stock full or queen, so you can't order a Casper or sleep number (unless they custom make these?)

You can do foam and cut it like post above mentions.

We added a nova gel foam 3 inch topper from Costco to ours. We use the same setup at home and love it. Did the same, bought a queen size, laid mattress on it, and traced pattern. Works great.

Thx

That's exactly why we took the stock mattress to the store so they could use it for a template.

You can get custom shaped mattresses that are not foam. Foam has the problem that body heat makes it softer and an indention forms. Better foam does this a bit less, but the problem seems to be inherent with foam. So investigate an innerspring or sleep comfort unit. We went with a bed in a box foam mattress. It's better, but not perfect. Sometimes it pays to pay full price. Good luck. Pat

We bought a new foam mattress from Mattress Insider for our Safari 23 corner bed. Very comfortable. I am a hot sleeper usually but have not had any warmth issues with the new mattress. Also was pleased with their customer service. They custom cut our mattress from the pdf from Airstream

The way to stop the mattress from moving around is to go to a store that sells area rugs and buy a roll of non skid underpayment. Made for rugs but you can cut to fit and under your mattress. It's made of a rubber like material and some feel tacky. This works very well.
Home Depot or Bed Bath and Beyond should have it
