Do disconnect the power before putting a metal tool in there--a short circuit WILL make the smoke (and sparks, and flames..) leak out of the system, and it will cease working...
I'd use needle nose pliers and be very gentle. Mashing the socket too tight is a worse issue. Don't ask why I know this...
a 'mashed' socket is rather difficult to "unmash"--kinda like potatoes...
