Tetons and Yellowstone… late planning, any private campground recommendations?

Hi! We had a last minute change of plans for summer and are now going to Jackson Hole/Tetons/Yellowstone… along with everyone else, ha! No availability at National/state parks and it seems private campgrounds have mixed reviews. Anyone have a great one they wouldn’t mind recommending in any of those areas? We are in a 25’ trailer if space is a concern.

Try Flagg Ranch at Headwaters RV Campground. It is located between Yellowstone and Grand Teton. A mite pricey but, this late in the game…

Need to know a bit more to be helpful. Not sure what you are looking for or when you want to go. Do you “need” full hookups, is electric only ok, does a site with no hookups work for you?

I just did a quick look at Colter Bay Campground and a few in Yellowstone, and if you are good without hookups there are still plenty of dates available.

This post won't be helpful, but here goes anyway!

Several years ago we were in Yellowstone when I had a 'surprise' tooth abscess. It was awful and required a mad dash back to an oral surgeon in Jackson. After the procedure, there we were in one of the busiest places in the country, trailer attached, and NO place to stay while the effects of the anesthesia wore off.

We saw The Virginan and stopped, knowing there was zero chance of there being an available space. Linda went to the office and asked anyway, and sure enough: no availability. She briefly explained our situation, and the park staff said, "we WILL find you a spot" ... And they did. So we spent the rest of the day and a night at The Virginian! I will long remember their kind helpfulness.

There are usually cancellations at both parks even at the height of the season. Got in last August at YS & GT with back to back reservations. Go ahead and reserve at a private park as backup, but keep checking the NP websites for cancellations and you may get lucky. Especially if fuel prices continue to escalate.

We stayed there quite a few years ago and liked the place. NPish. Saw griz (from a distance) along the Snake river which flows behind the CG and moose in the campground...

peace

We’re going there in June. Currently booked at Gros Ventre Campground in Kelly, between Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Might give them a try. This will be our first stay there. Long Long Honeymoon on YouTube recommended them. Good luck!

Way back in 2004 we stayed at the KOA at the south end of Jackson Hole it was a nice place .

The weather was sunny and warm so we decided to wash the tow vehicles, got them all nice and clean .

The next day we were to head to West Yellowstone we woke up to snow so we headed north through J.H. and the park most of the way but the snow was getting heavy when we got to the left turn for W.Y. and traffic there was at a standstill . So we turned around and went back to the KOA . They took us in no problem .

This was in July go figure.

Just a note, gros ventre is squarely in Grand Teton NP, not really between GRNP and YNP. I only bring it up in case anyone has a notion that Gros Ventre is a good ‘base’ to explore both parks. Grand Teton is easy to see everything in short trips from camp, but Yellowstone is a long drive, and it’s massive one you are inside and all the sights are far apart. Day trips to Yellowstone from GTNP would make for extremely long and tiring days. Better to try to get a spot in YNP or outside the gate in West Yellowstone.

Note also that the South Gate at Yellowstone (leading in from Grand Teton) features huge back-ups between about 1000 and 1600 hrs pretty much all summer long.

Much better to stay in or near each park rather than stay in one and commute to the other.

Yes to the above comments, plus there are two major road construction projects between the south entrance and Old Faithful this year and next.
