Tales from the Rock
As far as Airstreams go, there aren't many in my corner of the world - east of eastern Canada. There's two that I know of other than mine and one of those is resting peacefully. I thought would share a few pictures and descriptions of the places we visit, which are most often off the beaten path.
Our first trip of 2012 was an Easter long weekend at Terra Nova National Park. Ok, that's not exactly off the beaten path but it was technically still winter, at least around here. The park is open year round and during the winter months they keep 6 sites free of snow and plow the access road. The showers and bathrooms are hot, and firewood is provided in the cook house. We had the park all to ourselves.
Used the wood stove to cook Easter Sunday dinner. Bit of an unusual way to do it but we had fun. Surprised at how quickly it cooked.
We did some hiking along the trails, partially using snowshoes. Stopped for a lunch (we call it a boil-up in these parts) by a brook. Took a few pictures of an old spruce growing over a rock.
Next trip will be the May-24 long weekend, the official start of the camping season for most everyone north of the 49th.

These three bergs grounded in Quidi Vidi, which is an inlet about 5 minutes south of where I live. Can't get the AS down there as the road is too narrow.

Greetings
Hi there,
Greetings from Manitoba. We have good friends here that moved from the Rock some 30 years ago. We always look forward to a meal at their house and are quite familiar with and love the traditional dishes. They have a wood cookstove in their back yard.
You have a beautiful A/S

Well we are almost finished preparations for departure tomorrow on the first trip of 2013. This year is a week of trout fishing with my boys at Barachois Pond Provincial Park, a nine hour drive from home.
I de-winterized the AS last night and found two problems, both of them of the leaking kind. Last fall I installed a winterizing kit upstream of the water pump and now I am finding the pump appears to be sucking air. Maybe the three way valve is leaking. I have parked that problem and will deal with it later. The other issue manifested while I was topping up the tires. One of the stem valves started to leak so I will need to replace it. The TPMS cap has it sealed for now but I will make a permanent repair tomorrow.
We finished loading the truck and this appears to be the most stuff we have packed thus far. Compounding the issue is a little Zodiac I bought from Costco a few weeks back specifically for this trip. Add in the outboard, generators, fishing gear, bicycles for the kids, satellite dish for me (Stanley cup playoffs), and other stuff my wife made me pack. The old Ford is approaching the ultimate breaking strain!
I ordered Kona coffee from Hawaii for this trip and it arrived about two days ago. I'm looking forward to the first cup. My wife is simply looking forward to lobsters and mussels, which are abundant, in season and cheap. Ranks right up there with purses and shoes for her. There was no room for my ice maker in the truck as she over-ruled it favor of the big pot for the lobsters. That's fine for her but what about cocktail hour? My pleas fell on deaf ears. Some folks just do not appreciate what it takes to make good Martini.
True to form no May 24th holiday weekend would be complete without challenging weather, and it is snowing at our destination as I type. I'll send pictures after we arrive!

With all that snow you've got, could you use the lobster pot off-season as a sort of ice bucket for your martini fixings? Barring that, have you got a freezer for an ice cube tray in your fridge? [In the interests of the good, if not perfect, martini...]

Well, then just do as Noah did: take your time, and you'll arrive somewhere good!
Spent a week once on Newfoundland, and I've gotta' say that the scenery that comes with your home is among the best in the world. Not many roads to explore, but each turning has a new and scenic vista.
Have a great trip, and thanks for the pics!

It is 6:30 AM and I am parked in the best RV site at the Navarre Beach Camp Ground. I am looking out of the Panoramic Windows of my Airstream enjoying the view of Santa Rosa Sound. My family and I are surrounded by sand and water. A non stop breeze is blowing, we are sleeping with all the windows open. A fisherman has just pulled up with a surfboard on the back of his truck and heading into the water. I am enjoying the pictures and stories of a fellow Airstream owner who lives in snow and enjoys fishing with his family, Airstream trailers are magical. I have to go now the fishing pier is calling me.

First night was a stopover at the grandparents. Nana lavishes attention on my boys to the point of spoiling them rotten, as the saying go's. Bread right out of the over for me, and snow on the Airstream. Couldn't be better!

I had to do a double take on that one. A wood burning stove, not a stove made from wood...

I'll second the pix also. Like Knunut, we were stationed at Goose Bay Labrador from '74 to '76. We also have many memories from that time and the photos take us back there .

As is the Command Post and the housing area we lived in. The Goose was a unique assignment and depending on circumstances, some despaired leaving while others counted the days. Now living in Texas where a day in the 40s seems chilly I think back to a time when -40 was common, but let's not hijack this discussion.

Yes, Tom Horton's. it is somewhat of a national obsession up here.
We arrived safely at the campsite, despite the snow along the way. Weather is beautiful here, tucked in the mountains of western Newfoundland. The boys caught trout last night and were very excited. My father in law and I did we'll too. Here is a picture of the fisherman coming in from hauling his lobster pots. In the second pic he is banding the catch. The last is fresh herring frying for lunch.
I read that salmon was a good source of Omega 3 but herring is the king of all fish in terms the good oils. I guess the Norwegians have it right.
