Stuck in Sealy TX headed west

Anyone west of Houston (South Central TX) with road condition feedback? Headed to Big Bend NP, westbound on 10. We stopped in Sealy last night and now potentially stuck here until Thursday/Friday. I'll chance a few things, ice isn't one.

Btw, I came across a lot of concerns online driving 10 through Louisiana. Following 10 through Louisiana wasn't bad, a lot of it seems newer. A cake-walk compared to Eastern, TX! I thought I took a wrong turn into Mexico when I crossed the state line.

I’m in Fredericksburg (northwest of San Antonio) and the meteorologists are predicting a tenth of an inch of ice buildup on the roads. A trucker reported the condition of I-10 west of SA to Junction is hazardous with a lot of ice. Hang tight in Sealy. A lot of good BBQ places. Good luck

I can’t help, unless your misery would love some company. Traveling without the trailer, we got stuck on I-80 in Wyoming for two days, then advanced a tricky 100 miles only to get stuck for two more days, then another 200 tricky miles to get home last night. Woke up to learn that the road is closed again.

Consider it an opportunity to practice patience.

S1000,
We are in Brenham, not very far from where you are now. Roads are wet but no ice around here. I 10 west of San Antonio can ice quickly and be a real mess. I will send you a PM with our contact info

Stewart, I'm glad you made it through Orange and Bmt ok. The next challenge will be construction between Houston and San Antonio. Take the North 1604 loop around San Antonio and after that you will have clear sailing if the weather is good.

TV reports show multiple pileups on I-10 and I-20 in west Texas. Just hang tight for a couple days. It's just getting worse.

Drove I-10 from Crystal Beach to Austin on Sunday in the rain sometimes at 20mph. There was a truck on top of the concrete lane dividers and a large crane trying to get it off. Even slower there. From Sealy you're mostly past the construction. Past San Antonio there is nothing. Past Marathon the cell service goes away.

I've driven the stretch from Orange to Houston many times. One of the worst stretches of Interstate. I hear it was built before they really had written the interstate construction standards. Don't know. Could be true.

FYI: They don't really clear the roads here. They just wait for it to get warmer.

You don't want to chance being one of those "truckers in the ditch" in conditions like this in TX...can be lots of "space" between populations. I would enjoy the BBQ and stay local till Friday at least.

Thanks! I have been to all corners of the country over the past year, that stretch of 10 is insane!!! I just extended our stay through Thursday and will re-evaluate then. Sounds like everything west of here is somthing to avoid.

I really appreciate all the locals chiming in. Being from Minnesota, we're used to driving in rough weather. These southern ice storms are completely different.

I'm in San Antonio and would avoid the North 1604 route due to construction. If you're headed to Big Bend I would take I-10 to San Antonio then continue west on 90 to Del Rio and on to Marathon. It's a little farther but a more interesting route in my opinion.
Safe travels, good decision to wait it out in Sealy.

How about South 1604 to 90? Cutting across San Antonio on IH 10 is a pain.

South 1604 to 90 is a long way around, mostly 2 lanes.

I-10 to 90 is pretty much a straight drive South of downtown, plenty of lanes. I travel that route frequently.

If you want to avoid that you could take the I-410 South route over to 90. That wouldn't be too much out of your way and it's a good road too.

Never tried 410 S, only north and it ain't nothing to brag about especially that 90 degree turn in it. Will have to look at your route when I head to Big Bend the next time. I hope the weather clears up soon for the OP.

This is what we did in November to go from Houston to Big Ben. Through San Antonio on I-10 to US90 isn't that bad. US90 was more interesting than I-10 (I have driven I-10 a lot), but don't expect much cell coverage.

While in Sealy, Tony's restaurant is great. There is a place near there called Repka's Grocery. There is a cafe too and have best Cajun food in Texas. Also a nice Steven F Austin Museum in nearby San Felipe.
A lot of Texas history there.

A parody of flying: it is a lot better to be on the ground wanting to be in the air than in the air wanting to be in the ground. Better to be where there is food, power and water than off on the hill side beside the road somewhere upside down…….
