The way I personally define "map eligibility" is to have either:
Spent the night in the state
Spent the day in the state (not passing through)
Conducted business in the state while in the state.

"...At any rate, I have my map on the curb side near the hot water heater..." We like your idea of tracing your route also, Dave and Shari. We put our states' map on the inside surface of our door. Since we usually travel in summer or to warm places in winter, the door is more often than not open when we are in camp, and is there for people walking by to see and stop and discuss. Even so, we are finding that the edges of our states keep curling up. I was afraid to put it on the exterior of the trailer for that very reason. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how have you corrected it? ~G

I posted this in another thread a long time ago, but now I can't find it. Our map is affixed to a piece of plexi, it hangs on the inside of the back window with suction cups. When we check off a state I color it in with 'stained glass paint'. Looks pretty, and it's durable.
* that's an old pic, I have a lot more states colored in now! *
I like the thought of having the map on a piece of plexiglas so it could be moved into a new Airstream if you changed or got a new trailer. So that way you would not have to start all over again. My rear window is tinted though, so not sure if would work there. We started over with a new, blank states map when we got the Airstream because all our previous camping was either in a tent or with a pickup/camper and we wanted a new map of just Airstream travels. So we "lost" a lot of our northern states and a couple Alaska trips but wil get back there one of these days with the Airstream and then will add it back in.
I like the map on the exterior mainly because as a little kid we would spend a lot of our summers riding with my dad in his truck (18-wheeler) mostly across North & South Dakota and Montana and we would always see these RVs and trailers that would pass us and they had one of these maps, usually on the back and I would always look at it to see all the places they had been - and always said that I was going to get one someday.
50 years later and I now have my map. :-)
regards, Dave

Good thoughts all. We have choosen to say we must have camped together in a state to claim it. I have traveled alone on hunting trips and don't claim those.

I agree. I feel that alone doesn't qualify. Staying overnight as a couple in a state (camping or boondocking, even in Wal-Mart), qualifies for our map.
