Spare Keys While Traveling

For those of you who travel extensively, or for months at a time, may I ask how you handle your spare keys? Do you take all of your keys including main keys and "spare" keys with you? Do you leave your spare set back home with trusted family or friends? We are traveling more on longer trips, and next year we will be on the road for five months straight. We are careful about always double-checking the location of our trailer and tow vehicle keys, but I was wondering what the "best practice" was for such a situation. Thank you for your replies. Mike

Our rule is when one if us leaves the trailer, that person take a set of keys along. We also keep a spare set in a lockbox stored in the bumper.

We use one of those lock boxes like realtors use and hang it in the LP gas locker. But we too always try to have keys with us. Carabiner on a belt loop is easy to keep up with and easy for the other one to see when the inevitable quest comes up just as the door is closing, " Do you have your keys?" One of my friends keeps his spare key in a ziplock bag in his stinky slinky. To each his own, but each should have a spare key.

I have keys divided up into nylon pencil cases.
Blue is for the Airstream, red for motorcycles, tan for misc trailers, etc.
But the most important thing is to never set keys down where they don't belong. Like on the tailgate while working on something, or on a countertop. I do have spares for most things, but not the truck. (spare at home) I need to resolve that.

Keys for things like the hitch lock, the coupler lock, the surge protector lock, and others are labeled, always returned to the truck console. I don't even like putting them in my pocket.

We always keep one set of keys in the TV. We have a keyless entry on the F150; which I really like. Never leave both sets in the AS. Never leave home without an extra set of keys. As far as our house keys we have an extra set of keys in a lock box at the house for emergencies or if we want friends to check on things. Getting keyless lock pad on the door this winter.

We also have a spare set in a lock box attached to a propane tank.

FYI earlier threads/posts on "spare keys" --

We keep a set in the tow vehicle with digital access pad, and we each carry a set on us.

The wife and I each carry a set, I have a set in the propane compartment, and if things really get dire, I have a set at home that the neighbors can access and overnight to us if necessary.

Like others, keep the spares in a realtor box (Home Depot) attached to the propane tank cover. Relatives have the combination and can call whatever campground I am in to gain access. I keep them informed daily via SPOT

Hi, I keep one set of Airstream keys in my pocket and never go out without them. [wife won't let me go out pants-less] I keep a spare set of trailer keys in my F-150 and a spare set of F-150 keys in my trailer. My F-150 also has keyless entry.

I also have a third or more sets of keys for almost all of my vehicles.

Put your key fob in a Faraday cage, or key fob guard. Look at You-Tube videos to see how easy it is for the bad guys to enter your vehicle.

We have traveled in the Airstream quite extensively (over 1,900 nights). SuEllyn and I each have a set of keys for our Lucy that we always carry with us. There is also a set concealed on Lucy and a set in the tow vehicle.

Always remember that, in the right situation, you can close the Airstream door and accidently trip the lock. Doing this can make for a very memorable cookout at your campsite.

I always carry a set in my pocket. It is frightfully easy to lock the door on your way out.

We use a minimal set for both AS and TV (ignition, door entry and hitch lock) when we travel. The other keys (storage, water, battery) are kept in the trailer.

We also take full spare sets for the AS and TV, which are kept in the opposite vehicle. AS spare set in TV and TV spare set in AS. As long as we can get into one vehicle, we should be ok.

One set of keys in the truck glove box. In winter I keep one set in each vehicle so I can check the trailer in storage on a whim if I'm in the area.
Always carry two sets of truck keys on me when away from the trailer in case I get careless, but one is locked inside the truck glove box. Also have a hide-a-key for opening the truck door.

Spare airstream key goes in the truck, spare truck key goes in the airstream. Truck has keyless entry. I keep a 3rd set of keys at home.

Thank you everyone for the great ideas! I believe that the lockbox on the LP gas tank, hidden by the bottle cover, will work best for us! Thanks, again! Mike

While traveling (usually long distances... 1000s of miles yearly) we are never too far from our AS, so... we hide the emergency set of the F250 truck keys in the AS. We also hide an emergency set of AS keys in the F250. When going for a hike, etc., we "bury" both the "working sets" of truck and AS keys in the F250 and use the key pad for entering and exiting the F250.

Get a magnetic hide a key at Lowe’s and secure it under your haul vehicle. I lost my keys last weekend and fortunately had a spare set after searching for 10 minutes trying to remember where I hid the keys.
