Spare Keys

Yesterday I was reminded of the importance of having a spare set of keys.

We are on our way to the Region 2 rally in Niagara Falls, ON and left home yesterday morning. I remember locking the trailer door but when we stopped for a short break the keys were not where they usually are in the truck. I looked all over the inside of the truck and would have sworn I put them at their normal travel place but they were no where to be found.

I have no idea what happened to them from the time I locked the door till I got in the truck. But fortunately I had a spare set of keys that I have hidden on the outside of the AS. I am now using that set.

So if you don't have a spare set make one. Being locked out of your AS can ruin a trip pretty easily.

I used to use a realtor lock box installed inside the propane tank cover.

Wife has her own set of keys on a keychain each trip, as do I.

(a “key set” consists of main-door, storage compt’s, fresh-water/external-shower doors, LPG tanks, tongue-lock.)

A hidden main-door key is a good idea although tho’ I’ve yet to accomplish that. Those main door keys are a bit more complicated than just going down to ACE hardware and asking for a key to be made. Even if you find the correct blank (which I did in Quanah, Tx at the local NAPA auto parts…. they attempted to cut them…they looked excellent…except for lacking that black-plastic grip/handle, could not distinguish them from OEM…none of them worked…. 3 attempts…. gave up. I believe it takes a genuine professional locksmith.)

Great reminder.

I keep a spare in the truck. One day I’ll get them on the trailer somewhere. I also put an AirTag on the keychains.

We’ve always been concerned with locking ourselves out of the 55. So, we have a key box hidden on the exterior, a set my wife has as Boxite mentioned and our set of keys we keep in the truck that is the “go to” set. Since the H-20 lockset and key cylinder is unobtainable as an original, we carry a “pinger” to break the window next to the door. We have a piece of Lexan that fits the window and caulk for a get us home fix. My thought is be fully prepared and maybe it won’t happen.

4 Sets traveling.l

Hidden on/in AS exterior
Spare in truck (has remote app/On Star unlock)
Wife has set
My set

Always ask each other before locking “do you have your set with you”

So far so good !

We have spare set in a lock box attached to the propane line in the refrigerator area that can be opened from outside the trailer. One set in truck always, one set attached to my belt when traveling. Think about the cost and time wasted waiting for a lock smith to open door. You know that AS door locks have been known to lock on their own when door is shut hard.

I bought the lock box and never mounted it.
The tank cover is a good idea. (I considered the rear bumper storage, but that's wet.)
I keep my keys in one spot and only one spot and never do something like set them on the bumper.
Now I fear if the truck was stolen I'd be locked out. It's not only the door keys, it's the coupler lock, the generator cable lock, the surge protecter cable lock, the propane tank lock, etc.
Maybe those spares can go in the trailer in a discrete spot.

I'm the OP on this tread and just wanted to report that I found my keys after returning home. Somehow they got between the seat and the console. Unknown to me they must have fallen out of my pocket.

But having a second set of keys saved our trip.

Belt and suspenders: I keep an extra set of trailer keys in the truck -- and a spare set of truck keys in the trailer.

All,

I carry a set on my belt via clip with truck fob, a spare trailer set in pant leg pocket and another in the truck (hidden), and my wife has a full set. I can always get into my Ford truck via number pad.

I take my belt keys off and hang in trailer. IF the unfortunate happens and some how the trailer door gets locked, I ALWAYS have my pants on…. I hope.

I have installed a code operated safe in my RAM and it holds extra keys. On top of that, my wife carries a spare!
