Back in the day, especially before I-95, it was quite the place to stop for ice cream and fireworks. As a kid, my folks would stop on trips from Williamsburg, VA to Myrtle Beach, SC because my sister and I begged them to stop.

South of The Border

Most will say or think run don't walk away!

Aghhh was so “NOT" cool riding in the back seat of my Dad’s non air conditioned 64 Ford Falcon Wagon on our family Florida Trip. Remember all those count down signs. He never stopped.

When my kids were young we stopped one night in a rented RV got in late to a site ,woke up with a grand view of the sewage treatment plant.

Now I drive by and remember when it was new not a run down mess.

When I picked up my '73 in Wilmington, NC we stopped at SOB for Breakfast and late lunch. These images are the first ones I took of "my new airstream". Even paid the dollar for me and buddy to go to the top of the tower to get the one picture.

I agree that SOB glory days are in the rearview mirror, would love to have seen it from back in the day when this '73 was new and the campground was filled with what we now call vintage campers.

You Never Sausage A Place

Everybody is a wiener at South of the Border......

Yep..... a bit of “Americana” that you won’t find as you travel through Italy (LoL)

It’s worth a look.... as you drive by!

Campsites on their current website look like a little slice of paradise.

We use it as an overnight stop on our way to Florida. IMO it is more then adequate for that purpose. As far as the food goes well what can I say other then I find it edible

Pedro Sez...

That neon sombrero sign lights up the sky for miles in both directions... A signpost on way, through the Twilight Zone.

Come on folks, we are special but not that special. Visit there, have some fun, share some laughs and food.

Took my 03 Classic from S. of Charleston to N. of Richmond for repairs. On the return trip needed diesel so stopped at SOB. Then pulled into truck stop parking for the night.

Maybe I was lucky it was after dark LOL

We stayed there in 2014,
Fun spot to stay the night and buy cheap souvenirs for our friends.

I've been driving past Pedro's since the 70s. Never stopped for more than gas once. But it used to be close to home. So it wasn't a good stopping point.

Rite Of Passage

This is indeed a rite of passage. I would not recommend an overnight stay, the facilities are not well maintained. However, if you do not stop for lunch or to shop, you will forever wonder what you may have missed. There are tourist traps and then there is South Of The Border, the ultimate tourist trap. Picture yourself driving down I-95 wearing an authentic South Of The Border sombrero or a stuffed iguana to go on your dashboard.

Pedro no shoot ze bool!
XX Miles to go!

Forgot most of the ones I saw on my daily I-95 commute but its all up and down the roadside. Their info states about 175 billboards scattered.

South of the Border

It is crazy hot & humid in this part of the country in summer, so unless you have a genset you will need a place to pull in for the night and plug in,,,,,,,plus use some one else's shower so you dont steam up your RV. SOB is a minute from the I-95 exit, you can call ahead and get late check in for a one night stay, and their stores and fuel island are open late. It is not a destination, just a good place for a Traveler to rest for the night.
Doesnt get better than that.
