That’s a great idea but $90 for the 3 gallon can, $10 for a pour spout and $50 for the locking hardware not even factoring in the mounting plate, it is a little expensive.

I did the same for my SUV recently as I don't have open storage of a bed, and I don't care to store fuel inside the vehicle. Rotopax makes a variety of fuel containers and something can be had to fit any car. I use it as reserve fuel for my tow vehicle, but also for the generator.

Unfortunately, they don't make carriers for stock vehicle roof rack cross bars so I had to roll my own. Using Yakima crossbar adaptors, aluminum extrusions, and with a bit of the AS rivet inspiration.

Couple pics of my Fuelpax 3.5gallon container.

I really like your rooftop idea for an enclosed SUV. It’s definitely pricey, but less than the cost of cleaning up a fuel spill inside. The days of war surplus Jerry cans is long gone.

What are you using to connect the aluminum angles to the crossbars? Does it have a security lock (it’s a bit concealed by height and the side rails)?

I agree, and I keep going back and forth regarding our next generator as mine is very long in the tooth.

Modern jerry cans are still available. On an SUV, would probably need rear swingouts with a jerry can holder to use.

In regards to the angle to crossbar, using these yakima mounts with the hardware provided. It's a blind bolt with nut underneath. I'm not particularly worried about security. If they want it, there's tons of things that can be had across the rig and trailer.

That's great and all. But I would still carry a gas tank for tow vehicle fuel reserve.

True, you can get new cans, but not as cheap as you used to be able to get the surplus ones.

Thanks for the mounting info. I hear you on the theft issue. Was thinking about times when you take the TV into town.
