Skidaway Island State Park, GA
Looking for place for a long weekend in Mid Feb. within 3 to 4 hours from Metro Atlanta. Would rather go south than North for a little warmer weather.
Anyone ever been to Skidaway Island State Park?
Looks nice online and good reviews.

It is very nice, and very close to the wonderful city of Savannah. Not sure it is within four hours of Atlanta though.

Another vote for Skidaway. Very nice and as was mentioned, very close to Savannah.
I'd be surprised if you are disappointed!

FDR State Park is about 90 minutes south and west of Atlanta - nice park, with close to Calloway Gardens and FDR’s Little White House.

Skidaway Island is nice.
I also love Rivers End Campground on Tybee Island.
A beautiful and immaculately maintained city campground, with the beach and lovely little town of Tybee Island to walk.

well......Skidaway is booked solid for our dates. As is every other State Park in GA that I've checked. Any other ideas on the GA Coast or in the Hilton Head area? Someone mentioned Rivers End on Tybee but it looks kinda crammed. We really like state parks because sites are spaced out but...at this point, our options may be limited. Another result of Covid I guess... Everybody camping.

Everybody's reason for ranking a camping spot good, bad, or in-between differ. If you are just looking for a beautiful coastal location within an easy drive of Atlanta then try Hunting Island State Park outside Beaufort, SC. There aren't any sights to see in the immediate area other than the lighthouse, beach, and low country vegetation, but Beaufort is a quaint town within an easy 18 mile drive.

Tybee is pretty expensive, sites are tight. Nice lighthouse as does Hunting Island. I haven't been there, but Ft. McAlaster Park near Savannah is supposed to be nice. There are several private parks too. If you belong to WBCCI I suggest there are several members that offer courtesy parking in great locations in the area.

It’s interesting that campgrounds are jammed full, as some of us still at home are questioning the safety of travel to our reservations.

Try Hunting Island or Edisto, both is SC. Both great places but probably also full. With sales of RVs thru the roof - many companies up almost 50% in sales over previous years and I've seen reports of over 150% increase for some I suspect campgrounds are pretty full as people who now are forced to work remotely can work from anyplace with a good wifi connection.
Good Luck

Thanks for the advice guys. We are still looking.
We have a brand new trailer and just want to use it. Didn’t think it would be this difficult, especially dead of winter. Ga has amazing state parks, I guess people come from all over.

Agree on the GA parks. FL and SC are nice too.
George L Smith, Gordonia Alatahala and Little Ocmulgee are far enough from the coast that you might have a chance, but still have nice water views. (Gordonia is in the shadow of a prison, if that might concern you.)
Even closer is Dames Ferry Park on Juliette Lake N of Macon, but we’ve never actually been.
There are some nice, less visited parks in the far western part of SC that would be a straightforward drive along I 85.
And, there are some good COA campgrounds that are off the radar of many campers.
Good luck!

If you’re just looking for some toodling around then look for last minute cancellations and 1 night openings, supplement with Harvest Host and AS Courtesy parking or Boondockers welcome. I’ve been able to find 1-2 nights last minute even in FL state parks.

Check out Regional Parks that Georgia has. We have stayed in a couple and they are very nice.

We stayed at Blythe Island Regional Park just outside of Saint Simons Island not too long ago. It was a real treat, wonderful campground with full facilities.

Hi
It's the middle of winter and you are looking for sites on the "warm and sunny coast" .... they always are filled up this time of year. Everybody from "up north" ( including Canada) loads up and heads down there on a very regular basis.
If you just flat run out of options, Top of Georgia:
https://topofgeorgia.airstreamclub.net
Is reasonably close to Atlanta. Yes, it's up in the hills. We've been there, nice people and a nice place to camp out.

RiverBend Campground in Hiawassee.
Very nice private campground in North , GA on the Hiawassee River. We stayed there years ago in our SOB camper. They have some openings so we are going to give it a whirl. Wanted the coast (warmer) but oh well.
Thing about GA in Mid February is that it can be 20 degrees or 60, so we'll just have to see. Worse case its only a $10 cancellation fee is the weather looks to be bad.
Thanks again

Ft. McAlaster
I have spent time at Ft. McAlaster twice and would again. It was not crowded either time and is convenient to much of the Georgia coastal and historical features. Hunting Island in SC is also nice, but likely to be full.
