Sarasota Fl to Mason City Iowa travel recs
Going to visit the grand babies in the spring and want to make travel plans in advance. Heading up north but want to miss Hotlanta this time. We figured about 4 days travel staying three nights along the way. Looking for travel routes and places to stay along the way not too far off the highway. We would prefer a pull thru being only one night each place. We would rather spend a few bucks extra for a clean place. Thanks in advance for your help.

Haven't traveled from Florida to Iowa yet, but just looked at a US map. I'm guessing your usual route does carry you through Nashville. You might try getting onto I-10 and going through Alabama instead. You would go through Birmingham, but I don't recall it being difficult to drive thru. It's been almost 10 years since we passed thru it.

We were thinking the Alabama way. We'd like to swing thru Missouri and stay one night.

Yes, I too try avoiding Atlanta but often it's the best way out. Living in Venice, Fl it's the best way out unless you're traveling up the coast on I-95. So having said that, I always hit Atlanta early on any given Sunday taking the bypass around it and then enjoy the rest of the day. We came through there on July 29th + or - a day & there was a lot of construction & at least an hour delay, but it was late afternoon on a work day. There is another way if your heading towards Knoxville, use google map for routing.

I live in Iowa and take this route often. If you want to make the trip this fast you will have to go threw Atlanta, it is really not that bad if you just watch the signs. Two places I would not miss, Indian Springs State Park 1 day north about 75 miles south of Atlanta and Bledsoe State Park just east of Nashville for night 2. These are great places.

I am retired too, we like to take our time. The longer we pull our airstream the slower we go, we have found some real nice places. As Diana Shore said "See the USA in our Chevrolet". I have a Chevy TV.
Land be Tween the lakes on the Tenn. Kentucky boarder is fantastic, you will have hell making a reservation, but if you look it up on Google and follow the instructions it can be done, hell I did it. A little out of the road, but a real nice place is Ray Behrens on Mark Twain Lake just west of near Monroe City, Mo.. This is a Corp. of Eng. campground. Then up to Lake Red Rock near Pella, IA. There are a couple Corp. campgrounds and be sure to stop in Pella.
Have a great trip.

We like to spend our first night at at the COE (Corps of Engineer) campground at East Point Georgia (actually just a half mile or so across the Fla state line in Chattahooche, Fla area). The next night at Gulf Islands Nat'l Seashore campground in Ocean Springs, Ms (just east of Biloxi). It is best to reserve this in advance on Recreation.gov. Then head up to Tunica and spend the night at the SAMs Town Casino RV park, nice cement pullthroughs (you can eat at their buffet). Then head for the COE near Carlyle, I'll. This is a beautiful campground and will allow you to avoid St. Louis before heading NW to Davenport and on up to Mason City (an area I haven't been through yet).

If you're anywhere near St. Louis, we highly recommend a visit to the Cahokia Mounds Illinois Park...An ancient Native American village for more than ten thousand residents east of the Mississippi River across from St. Louis. Illinois has done a magnificent job in making this available to us. Its near Cahokia Downs if you're interested in horse racing.

Keep um coming. I'm writing everything down. We always enjoy staying at the COE campgrounds. Very clean and a great senior discount.

If you're planning to go through Nashville, the Oct. 2016 TrailerLife issue has an article.
Going thru Pella, IA... When is your trip? Pella and Orange City, IA are both Dutch communities who have Tulip Festivals in May. Second and third weekends of the month I believe. The info can be found on the internet. We used to live in OC, so of course it's our favorite. But it's in NW Iowa.
