My rig of Tundra and FC 25FB is up to the task generally speaking but I've been reading mixed reviews of Route 64 heading east from Taos to Eagles Nest. Some say very winding and steep with few pull outs. Others a walk in the park.
Alternatives are:
A. Take 25 to Springer and 58 West.
or
B. 25 to Las Vegas to 518 to 434 North.
Time wise all within 30 minutes of driving..... and time not a factor for me.
Made that ride several times with a 25' Airstream driving a Tundra. The road has some steep areas and numerous tight turns. There are a few areas to pull over if needed. My advise is to take it slow and enjoy the ride.
The Vietnam War Memorial in Angle Fire is a must visit place...

I've driven that route a few times. A few hundred times. Well, ok, maybe a thousand times.
Would I do it again. Sure. No problem. It's a pass on a narrow highway, but so what's new in the west? There are a LOT worse passes, including some that I won't drive again (and one or two that I was really dumb enough to drive over the first time around).

Thanks!
Curious to find a good app or map that points out routes to be wary of.
Just did that drive last week. You'll be fine. There's enough traffic on Rt 64 that everyone drives fairly slowly anyway.
The hardest part for me is remembering to pay attention to where I'm going--I tend to get caught up in watching all the beautiful scenery around me when I'm in Northern New Mexico.
We drove Taos to Eagles Nest in June with a Tundra and 25FC and had no issues. Just do the same as other responders have said, take it slow. Not that difficult.
I live in Taos and have driven the road to Angle Fire/Eagles Nest many, many times including pulling my RV. I think you will have no problem with your Rig on the road. Plus the drive from Taos to Eagles Nest is so much more beautiful than I-25. However, the drive from Eagles Nest to Cimmaron on the way out to I-25 is also a sight to see. But I prefer the Taos to Eagle's Nest Route.
Check out a website called "Flatest Route" you enter your destination and start point and it will give you the flatest route to take, time, miles etc. User friendly too. I wish we had the information a couple of times when we ended up on very steep winding roads just using a regular map. By the way... it's the going down thats the difficult driving.
