Santa Barbara to Moro Beach

We are getting conflicting advice from non campers about taking 154 from Santa Barbara to Morro Beach, towing our FC27.

Is 101 the better route for towing?
Any experienced advice will be appreciated.

We have been towing our '58 Airstream Traveler or in our Motorhome towing a CRV for 7-8 years on the 101 and that route is good. BUT we try to miss any rush hour traffic & why not! Where are you going in Morro Bay? we have been going to the State Park & the Morro Dunes both have been good.

Take the 101, I commute the 154 5 days a week and it is very twisty and goes over a 2500 foot pass with 6% grade.
I see occasional rv traffic and the last one was decending into SB with a string of traffic stuck behind them doing 35 mph in a 55 zone that usually sees 65 mph.

I was very familiar with 154 and 101 many years ago and it sounds like things have not changed very much. Both have to cross the Santa Ynez Mountains, but San Marcos Pass (154) is much steeper and more winding than Gaviota Pass (101). In terms of scenery, one is not superior to the other in my view. I agree with the others who have responded, take 101.

The one grade you climb (Nojoqui grade) while on the 101 is only 800 feet elev or so and is relatively straight with three lanes N bound.
Take the 101.

Holiday traffic was a bear today on the 154. If you are not familiar, take the 101 as AlinCal suggests. You may want to spend a day in Solvang on the way back and there are RV parks in Buellton. Have a safe trip.

Take the 101 from SB to Morro Bay and exit to South Bay Blvd, then right to Morro Bay SP. There were dry camping sites available today.

I go from SoCal to Lake Casitas then on to Morro and San Simeon frequently. I always take the 101. Its an easy tow. Dont forget to go have grilled oysters at Tognazzinis Dockside Morro Bay.

154

Take the 101. It is a few miles longer but twice this past year while not towing I have noticed a particular vehicle turn off 101 and take 154. On the other end we ended up at the same place on 101. No time saved by going over the pass. We only take 154 when we have plenty of time and want to see the scenery again but as Tim A mentioned, the scenery is just as nice on the coast. Safe travels.
