San Antonio, Texas to Box Elder, South Dakota

Greetings. My wife and I retired in March and left our home state of Oregon. We are considering becoming South Dakota residents to save money (Oregon would tax our retirement). Currently, we are in the San Antonio area - any suggestions on routes or places to stay between San Antonio and Box Elder, South Dakota?

Take care!

State parks

Here are a few good camping parks along the way:

Abilene State Park, TX a quiet park for overnight.

Palo Duro Canyon south of Amarillo, TX. Plan to spend a few days here. It's the second largest canyon in the USA. Best hiking ever but it can get really hot. Hike in the early morning and take plenty of water.

Lake Mcconaughy State Recreation Area And Wildlife Management Area in Nebraska.

Custer State Park in SD. Awesome scenery but don't pull your trailer through the needles highway.

We stayed at Rocky Point State Recreation Area near Belle Fourche, SD as our home base while we took day trips around the area.

Have fun, enjoy your trip!

Look over the total tax burden info before making major decisions.

If you can get in, Fort Robinson in NE panhandle is a great place. Worth visiting even if you can’t get a site.
