S. Carolina to West Yellowstone
Looking for the best driving directions from S. Carolina to West Yellowstone, will have about 3 weeks to make the trip pulling 2019 26ft flying cloud. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Having worked in YNP for 14 summers, I have commuted there from Miami in practically every way imaginable.
If it were me (from S. Carolina): I26 to I40 to I24 to I57 to I64 to I70 to I29 to I80 to US191 north through Jackson, WY (GTNP) to the south entrance to YNP.
Plan B would be: I40 west to Albuquerque, north on I25 to I80 than as above.
This assumes you want to maximize your time in the great western parks (Grand Teton and Yellowstone). I generally dislike the Interstate Highways but you can’t beat them for making good time.

I would amend what the first poster said. I-70 to Salina KS, then take KS hi way 81 North to York NE and pick up I 80 there. Hi way 81 is a 4 lane road in super condition and is less traffic than I 29. We live in Kansas City and this is how we go. Then I 80 into WY and then at Rawlings we go through the Wind River area to Dubois and into the parks thru there. It's lovely.
This route avoid Denver which has a lot of traffic. There is 1 mountain pass of fairly short duration on i-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie, but not much besides that until you get to the Tetons.

I know nothing about the eastern options, but agree with Piggy Bank about 80 across Wyoming to Rawlings, then up 287 to Colter Bay. At that point you are in Grand Teton and only 30 miles to Yellowstone’s south entrance. It is shorter and faster than 191 north from Rock Springs, a nice drive, and there are decent places to lay over in Lander or Dubois.

When you leave YNP, use the East Gate and pick up US14 or US14A eastbound, cross the Bighorn Mountains to I90 then scoot over to Deadwood.
I never cared for the place, myself. Kind of a Western-themed Myrtle Beach.

When you cross the State line from KS into CO, stop the truck and say: “That John Denver’s full of crap man!”

Adding some RV parks we have stayed at and can recommend-to/from/around these areas:
Columbia MO Cottonwood Falls RV Park. Avoid staying in St Louis or Kansas City. This is a much nicer option.
Salina KS KOA
Kearney NE Kearney RV Park
Sidney NE Cabellas has paid camping with hookups-first come first served no reservations-arrive by 3 pm or risk having to boondock.
Limon CO KOA
Denver metro Chatfield State Park. Many sites full hookups. Reservations will be needed far ahead of time. Great place to stay if you are seeing a show at Red Rocks.
Wind River KOA in Dubious WY-easy last full hookup place to stay before hitting the national parks
Red Mountain RV park Kremling CO. We stayed there on the way home and found it to be nice family run place in a small town.

Deadwood is like a fake Disney town. Why bother when the Black Hills are nearby and incredible.

Devils Tower, north of Deadwood is far more worthy of your time as is Minute Missile National Historic Site near Badlands.

Minute Missile National Historic Site TOUR is worth your time and money, but you need to make reservations FAR IN ADVANCE. They only do tours a couple days a weeks (in the morning) and only allow about 6 - 8 people on the tour. You go into the underground silo control center. You would never see it any other way. Nearby is the largest drug store in the United States - Wall Drug Store located in Wall, SD. Worth your adventure. RV park in town. It is OK but not a resort. Everything is within 15+ miles of each other, including the Bad Land National Park.
Agree that Deadwood is not worth your time and is a tourist trap. Jackson Hole is a tourist trap as well, but not as bad as Deadwood.

Avoid I25 and Denver Metro while towing
We live East of Denver about 28 miles just off I70 and we avoid all of the Denver Metro area when towing our coach. I80 through Cheyenne is the best route as already mentioned.
Enjoy your trip it is beautiful country.

Yes but...
If you do need to include Denver on your trip, I recommend at Limon taking CO State Hiway 86 from Limon to Castle Rock, which is the south edge of the Denver metro. Good road and pretty. Then scoot around the Denver metro around the south west edge and then join I70 at Morrison.

I was disappointed in Deadwood.
In reality it's just a bunch of sleazy casinos lined up.
Better to see Devil's tower and Custer State Park.
I had the attitude that there's nothing I want to spend time on east of the Mississippi, so my route was Nashville to St. Louis, too KC. (Bypassing St Louis north on I-255/I-270 and Bypass KC via I-435 then north on I-35 to Soux Falls and west on I-80. You'll cut across Wyoming but the highway is not too mountainous. Unless you're expecting snow, then I'd stay farther south.

It's a classy tourist trap, though. If you take in Jackson, stop and see the "Museum of Western Art" just north of town across from the Elk Refuge.
I'm no tea and crumpets guy, but I was blown away on how good it is. Food was great and not too pricey.
It would be easy to miss, thinking it's some old structure on the hillside.

Hey John- when you going? Lots of routes and "advise" here...but when you are going and where you want to stay are important. I have a "few" suggestions on where to stay if you want to PM me? As you may know, Patti and I go each year and spend the summer in the area, June thru Sept. Let me know if I can help.
