RV Campgrounds in or near New Orleans

Hello all,

I am attempting to plan a visit to New Orleans in September and while I have stayed in Bayou Segnette State Park about six years ago, I am wondering if anyone has a recommendation near the French Quarter or at least closer than Bayou Segnette.

Thanks for any assistance here.

There is a French Quarter Rv resort but it is really at edge of of the quarter and I would hesitate to walk in and out of it at night. Ponchatrain Landing is another private option a few miles away. If you don't want to stay at state park you might reconsider taking RV unless this is part of bigger trip. You can get 4 star hotel room in central business district (west of canal and safely walkable at night) via Priceline for around $90 a night in September about same as site at french quarter rv resort.

We have stayed at French Quarter RV several times, and it is secure, safe and very nice.

It is on the edge of the Quarter, new since Katrina, and allows easy walking access, which is very convenient.

If you are into drinking and the nightlife, you don't need to drive back to a campground if you stay here.

I wouldn't walk back there in the dark, but a cab could drop you right at the passcode accessed gate.

I believe they are still Passport America, too, giving 50% off one night.

Second Lily&Me above. Although we haven't stayed there, we have friends who stay at the French Quarter RV and can't say enough good about it. Nice property, well protected, good location. It is pricey compared to Bayou Segnette but when you factor in the parking, traffic, etc., it's not that bad. We just stayed a week at Bayou Segnette, drove order to New Orleans almost daily, and although not a big deal, would stay at French Quarter RV next time.

Have stayed at French Quarter RV several times and walked back and forth to the main Quarter day and night without incident. New Orleans has crime just like every major city with tourists. Just be aware.

French Quarter sounds good to me. We need to plan a trip to New Orleans to see the World War II Museum and the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium.

If the French Quarter RV Park is full, or too expensive for you, or too hard for you to drive to with a long trailer, another possibility is the KoA Kampground in Kenner, LA. It's about as far away from the Quarter as is Bayou Segnette State Park, but at least it has the advantage that you don't have to cross the Mississippi River to get to the French Quarter. And it has a shuttle service!

Campgrounds In New Orleans

I highly recommend Pontchartrain Landing.
Used the Passport America membership for a 50% savings last year.
Some very nice waterfront sites available and the entire park is well maintained.
Easy taxi service to French Quarter too if you want to party and not drive back.
Secure gated location.

Have fun...

The French Quarter RV Park is great. Just stayed there and found it wonderful. We also stayed at the North Coast, Fontainebleau State Park. Both are wonderful. At the North Coast, the food is as good as NO, but cheaper.

Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville used to be even nicer when it had more trees, but hurricanes have taken care of that. Also on the North Shore you will find Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville, about the same distance from the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge but west of the bridge rather than east.

Other State Parks within commuting distance of New Orleans are Tickfaw State Park near Hammond, St. Bernard State Park in Braithewaite, and Buccaneer State Park near Waveland, MS, which is a good choice if you want to hit both the French Quarter and the Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos without breaking camp.

We stayed here for three nights. Not fancy, but relatively close to the Quarter, and other things.

Definitely not the best part of town, but not the worst, either. I've driven right past this place on many occasions while en route from my office to the IHNC Surge Barrier while the barrier was under construction, and hardly even noticed it was there. In fact, I'd completely forgotten about it until you reminded me.

My current favorite N.O. restaurants are Cochon and Herbsaint ( both are Donald Link). Mothers and Johnnys are my picks for po-boys. I like Stanley's for breakfast and Deanies for fried seafood. Port of Call has good burgers and sweet alcoholic drinks. Frenchman St area has best local music at night. Magazine street is the best area outside the quarter for strolling and shopping. Of course, there are tons of other good restaurants and things to enjoy.

Last April we stayed for four days at the New Orleans West KOA and would recommend it. The shuttle service was dependable and the park was well run. You will have to take a taxi back if you want to spend the evening downtown though.

NO and the French Quarter...

Thank you all for your great info. As for eating, I consume those fat pills and coffee at Cafe du Monde and the BBQ oysters on the half shell in the Hilton...as I remenber.

If I do pull to NO I will let folks here know so you can say hello if you like. The meeting is about folks who have Nikonitis, similar to aluminitis but just a addicting.

Anyway....
