Recommended 4 - 5 day route from Phoenix to Dallas

We are towing our rig to a wedding happening in the Dallas area in early March and we are not up for flying in the COVID world. Can you kindly share the routes you have used? We'd like to take a different route back to take in more scenery and we would want at least two stops each way with full hookups to manage the tanks, batteries etc. I especially appreciate any info about recent road conditions as the cat that rides the center console doesn't do well on bumpy roads

Ok Don, I know the cat advice wasn't too helpful.But its early!
Here's a little trucker tip.I never go anywhere without a 50 State trucking Atlas.
Real road maps.Im not going to give you routes, but some decent advice.
What's a easy route for one guys rig, might not be for another guy.Depending on a lot of stuff, but towing experience is #1.Often the Interstates through big cities are fastest route, but very rough on new to towing people.So a more scenic, but slower trip might be better.
The paper /plastic maps give you a Topographic map of each state on top.Unless you're going Elk hunting, or snow sking, avoid elevations as much as possible.
So as you look at states on the way, you can get a idea of what you will be looking at, without ever seeing the route before, and plot several routes( State roads are generally much nicer scenery/ less traffic).
I don't rely on GPS, it can get you in some real rough situations.Im.a map guy.
Try and avoid big cities during the day, if possible.Some areas like entire Dallas metro, are a towing nightmare on a sunny summer day.
Take it easy, try and take the road less traveled, + keep the round side down.

We’ve traveled several times on I-10 from central Texas to Phoenix. I think Google maps showing I-10 all the way to just east of Van Horn Tx, then pick up I-20 to Dallas. 10 is slightly bumpy just west of El Paso, but not bad. 10 in Texas is in pretty good shape. I can’t give you much info on 20. Our cat travels with us but sleeps like a log in the back seat. I would stay on I-10 since a lot of the minor roads were pretty beat up from Texas into New Mexico by the oil patch traffic. Good luck

It is an easy 4 or 5 day ride. Fastest and easiest is I-10 to I-20. Not a lot to see in West Texas, but plenty of RV sites along the way.

Marfa , Texas is an unusual little town. Mexican-Americans, Cowboys and California Hipsters mingle peacefully.

The Tumble In RV Park on the south side of town is great.

On our first AS tow trip, we left I-10 in Deming, NM, and went north via US 180 to Silver City, NM, great little big town worth spending some time. From there we went back down to Lordsburg and took US 70 west back through Arizona (spent a couple days at Roper Lake) and eventually home to Phoenix via Globe/Miami and US 60. Lots of great scenery and the highways were in relatively good shape. Not a route for speed demons.

Not much to do along I10 or even I20. Some cool, but significant, detours you might consider are White Sands NP, Guadalupe Mountains NP, Big Bend NP, Fort Davis, and Marfa.

I’d take the long route...

I-17 north to Sedona (beautiful)
I-40 east through Flagstaff (Grand Canyon), Albuquerque (Walter White?), Oklahoma City
I-35 south to Dallas

The 40 is a much more interesting drive to me..

Phoenix to I10 to I20 to Dallas. Home by way of I35 to OKC, I40 to Flagstaff and South to Phoenix. Or you can do 287 up to I40 at Amarillo and skip OKC.

The only thing I will add is if you come through Tucson and want to stop DO NOT get off on the Broadway/Congress exit as we are in the middle of a six lane widening project and Broadway is currently two rough, narrow lanes with barricades and signs uncomfortably close to your mirrors.
