Recommendations for Asheville
We're presently in a great little RV park in Fries, Virginia, "Fries New River Trail RV Park" which is just excellent, in a beautiful part of the Blue Ridge Mtns., and highly recommended. Heading off to Asheville tomorrow and looking for a good place to stay. I don't mind being 10 or 15 minutes outside of town. The parks close in sound pretty dismal. In fact there's a lot of dicey reviews on the internet of the parks in the area. Ideas and thoughts from members would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

We toured Campfire Lodgings last time we were up in the Asheville area. We have not stayed there but were impressed with the view. Have read some favorable reviews.

There is a small campground on US 64 near Lake Lure called Rivercreek. It's quiet and not to far from Asheville. We like it, but we may be a bit biased, since it is owned by relatives.

We stayed at the KOA on our last visit to the area. We toured the Biltmore which was great but a little $$$. I found a very helpful local tire store to take care of a flat (valve stem problem) and then on up to Boone. The KOA was nice with a friendly helpful staff. Good luck, have fun.

Campfire Lodgings
We loved Campfire Lodgings. The best sites are P1 thru P5 which have the best views. P8 also has a great view. Any of the other sites are nice but lack the view of the ones mentioned.

I agree 100%. Here are some photos of the view from our site when we stayed there.

I'm sorry I can't help with a campground, but do visit the Biltmore Estate, and if you like wine, try or buy some othe their whites, my favorite wines come from there. Good luck and let us know what you found/did. MPJ

We just stayed in Campfire Lodgings (2 weeks ago), and it was quite good - gorgeous views. It's a little pricey, and even without the great sites they are all quite nice. The "great" sites get a lot of sun, no shade, so if it is going to be hot when you visit keep that in mind.
Check out the drum circle in Asheville - really cool! Also had dinner at Tupelo Honey, right in the square, really good.
We also went up on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mount Mitchell - nice hikes, nice views.
Enjoy!

Lake Powhatan just off the Blue Ridge is a good place. I have tent camped there several times before buying the Airstream and had a great time. A lot of the sites have no power, but the place is gated and the hiking/biking trails are 2nd to none. As previously mentioned, Don't miss the Biltmore. Get your ticket online and it may be cheaper. Also, Chimney Rock Park, about 25 miles south, is worth the time.

Steve,
Mama Gertie's Hideaway, Swannoa North Carolina (828) 686-4258.
I'm just back from 173 days on the road with my Sprinter truck/Mini Cooper/Argosy rig, touching down in 38 US cities.
Mama Gertie's was THE BEST park that I stayed at on the whole tour.
Tom and Roxanne, the owners there, are just fantastic. Cleanliness, attention to detail to be seen everywhere. Tell them Sergei with the MINI sent yah.
The place is not as pricey as the Campfire mentioned here but has the same stunning views.
Each space is terraced; you park just below and just above your neighbors on the mountainside.
Asheville is a minature Austin; one of the coolest towns in America.

Not familiar with Mama Gertie's, but will be sure to check it out next time.
If you stay in Swannanoa, be sure to check out Black Mountain (cool little town), and has a beer/wine shop that sells growlers from Pisgah Breweries - try the pale ale. Also Montreat is next door - worth a drive through. There is a campground in Montreat, but it is REALLY small and only for the adventurous with an Airstream.

Ditto and I will add:
There's a good coffee shop in Black Mountain as well, and the German restaurant serves some good eats too if you're so inclined.
