Rear Ended by an 18 Wheeler
Thought you all might "enjoy" (is that the right word?) these pictures.
My wife and I were heading from Austin, TX to Hattiesburg, MS last Friday when we suddenly encountered a complete traffic stop on I-10 a few miles outside of Baton Rouge, LA. I brought the truck and trailer to a stop and just as I started to let off on the brake we got a good jolt forward. At that moment my heart sank. I knew I had been rear ended I just had no idea how bad. Kind of like a hammer hitting a marshmallow.
Now it's time to start working with the other driver's insurance company. Wish me luck!

My God, that truck is damn near perfect after the collision. Scary how resiliant those things are. Sorry to hear about that - it's every Airstreamer's nightmare. Good luck - and hope you get back out on the road very soon.

Ouch! That really sucks! Best of luck dealing with the insurance company - make sure you don't give those blood-suckers an inch.

Oh boy
Just seeing the picture makes me queesy. I'm glad everyone is ok. I hope all the folks out there who claim Semi drivers are the safe ones note that THE TRUCK was going to fast and that it is ALWAYS the fault of the bozo who doesnt maintain brakeing space. Believe it or not, when I worked in Emergency services, there were times on the interstate that I had my ambulance, lights and sirens going, moving as fast as it would go with a semi crowding my bumper.
For petes sakes people, hang up and drive and maintain breaking space.

Hey Joe,
So sorry, I know you have put a lot into your trailer from reading your posts.
I am sure it put a damper on your vacation. Are you gonna get it fixed or look for a new trailer? Please keep us informed on your progress.

Good luck with insurance and finding someone to fix the A/S correctly, if that is possible.
Let us know where the repairs will be done, if you go that route.
Are you and the A/S still in LA, or back in TX?

I am confident the Airstream will be considered a total loss. Here's a general overview of what might need to be repaired/replaced if it were to be fixed: - There are 8 rear panels that need to be replaced along with the rear window.
- Frame and plywood floor are cracked approximately 3-4 feet in on the right hand side.
- Rear bumper and storage compartmet are gone.
- Rear bedroom is demolished. Everything back there would need to be replaced. Interior endcap, interior skin, ribs, cabinetry.
This is just a general overview. I haven't spent a lot of time really analyzing it because I can tell the repair would be cost prohibitive.

Oh, and after all that work! What a disaster!
No surprise the truck looks fine, there's nothing there to hit except a nice soft cusion of aluminum. I see the truck's bumper did get bent up where it encountered the trailers frame.
Sorry for your trailer, but I'm glad you're all ok!

The wide blue stripe on the Excella's is really an 18 wheeler magnet. 
Sucks em into the back end of the trailer.
Damage like that can easily be repaired, but the shop that does it better know how, before they start.
The rear ended model in our website, was converted by us into a custom "on site" race horse "jockey" uniform and "horse" blanket shop.
The owners travel, to this day, to horse race tracks, plug the trailer into city power, turn on the exterior flashing lights and their in business fabricating custom jockey uniforms and customized blankets for the horses.
The real problem, in your case, is that the trailer will probably be totalled out by the insurance company.
Buy it back, and you have a nice project, or take it to a shop that has proved they can rebuild it.
The cost to rebuild rear end damage, such as your Excella has, is less for a center bath model than a rear bath model.
If your crystal ball was up to the task, it could have warned you of the up and coming problem, so that you could have entered our X-STREAM MAKEOVER contest.

I'm glad that you are all OK. I can only imagine what the impact might have done had the AS NOT been attached to your vehicle.
Like a bunch of others on this forum, you've put a ton of time, money and effort in your restoration project. I chickened out and bought new.
And seeing the photos....that just makes it all the more sad.
I hope that the dust settles quickly, that you remain devoted to Airstream and continue your alumminum pursuits.

I personally, and others on this Fourm, will be very interested in who you are insured with, what type of policy (ACV or agreed value), and how quickly they handle the claim and your indemnification.
