Put down your mobile phone!

Two weeks ago we were headed to Tallahassee for the Region 3 rally. We never got there. As we were traveling Westbound on I-20 outside Columbia, SC an SUV travelled up the side of SilverLeaf II, demolishing the entire streetside of our trailer. Traffic had slowed down and then stopped so looky loos could see an accident on the Eastbound side. I donít know for sure that the driver was looking at an electronic device. For sure he/she didnít see the traffic had stopped.

Anyone want to guess what the repair bill is going to be?Click image for larger version

Barry,

That's nasty. Hopefully they got caught.

Guesstimate, Not from me. Prediction a new 33' instead.

Safe travels.

So sorry for this! Are you assuming that the insurance company will pay to have this damage repaired? [vs. "totaling" the trailer]

That is not written in stone IMO.

I can understand being upset in general, but does it help to post the headline above in view of the following?

It's going to be horrendous. Hope all of you are okay! Sorry for what you have and will go thru.

We agree!!!!

Driving is already a divided attention task without all the additional activities that keep getting added. And then the other driver says my bad so sorry and gets defensive. (Made the last part up)

Please, please drive with your full attention to the task.

How awful, Barry.

Sounds like no one was hurt, thank goodness.

Gary, I really don't want a new trailer, as I've put just over 20K in this one. Last "investment" was 4 BattleBorn's (last year). My energy to be independent of an electric pedestal is wholly complete with great batteries, 600W of solar and my 30 amp inverter. If worse comes to worse I run the Honda EU3000I Handi.

I've looked at the new models several times. Not sure I see a
$180K trailer in my (now completely retired!) future.

Please keep us updated on the insurance negotiations. Recovering your labor might be a sticking point IMO, sorry to say.

The good news is nobody was hurt. The driver of the Cadillac SUV not only totaled their vehicle (I assume, as the wheel and tire were separated from the front wheel drive and the front end was demolished), they also got a traffic citatation.

The SC Highway Patrol was very professional, helpful, and did a great job.

Not visible in the damage is the slash in a brand new Michelin Aegelis tire, and one of the new TPMS sensors in the TST system that was on its very first trip.

Hi Maggie!

In the grand scheme of life, this is just one more memory -- but, one we could really do without.

The three basset hounds slept through the whole thing. While we obviously felt (and heard) the action, I don't think the truck moved at all.

Out of Doors Mart (where I've bought my two Airstreams), finished the estimate on Friday. I heard from the adjuster today. He was very knowledgeable about Airstreams. From what he said, it should be approved in the next 48 hours. Both the miscreant and I have insurance from USAA. I'm now in my 54th year with USAA and they are always on top of this kind of thing.

I would pull all of the batteries, solar panels, inverter, MPPT charger, etc.. and stick those in your garage. That trailer will be totaled IMO with the structural rib damage. That way you at least have some of your assets to deploy in the next one.

Nope. If I look at the financial side ONLY, the numbers don't work. What I would get on a totaled trailer doesn't come anywhere close to the cost of a new
Classic. I have zero deb both the 30 and 33 Classics I'd rather avoid. While I could do some workarounds, I don't want to go through the agony I went through to install solar, the 30 amp inverter (sub panel, etc), a dishwasher, and a host of other things I've got in the current trailer.

There are no frame issues. Yes, a couple of outriggers have to be replaced along with some ribs. AND panels galore. The trailer pulls fine and did not have wheel/axle damage.

I know the techs who will do the repair work and am confident it'll all be fine.

Thatís awesome. Having line of sight to good techs to do the work within the bounds of the insurance payout will make all the difference.

Keep us all posted!

Thanks for the updates . . . standing by for the dollars and cents . . . with all parties signing off on the same page.

Reviewing the photos does suggest that the damage is fairly well confined to a discreet repairable area IMO.

The dogs sleeping through the whole event is a good sign . . .

Yikes.

Best news so far seems to be that everyone's ok, the at-fault party did not leave the scene, both parties are insured, and the insurance company seems willing to fix the trailer instead of totaling it.

Nothing else really matters. Best wishes for a happy outcome.

You're lucky the new aluminum won't buff like your vintage model. I'd be asking for your expert help!
