We recently stayed at Half Moon Bay State beach. What a nice camground. We can't wait to go back. It is dry camping with a dump site at the campground. It's a stones-throw away from the beach. The bathroom facilities were clean with nice, hot coin-op showers.
We heard that they campground will be shutting down temporarily in March so they can add water and electric hook ups.

I assume Wright's Lake is dry camping? Is there a dump site near by? Do their sites accommodate large trailers?
I love your pictures!
Wright's Lake is officially on 'the list'. It is exactly what I dream about. I wouldn't mind staying a week there, but a week might not be long enough.

Yes, it's dry camping. We have adapted to staying up to 2 weeks at a time. A generator to recharge with. We use the clean chemical pit toilets when we can, (trailer potty for night time visits). Also a 'blue boy' should we top our b-tank. Grey water 'can' go into a gopher hole. Nearest dump station is 8 miles away. Further for supplies including gas. So stock up before arriving. We usually plan a convertible ride to Lake Tahoe which is just on the other side of that mountain in the pictures. I've seen a few large moho's and 30+ foot trailers there but there is a couple of low and high center spots in the road in. All roads in are paved. I recommend the west road in rather the road from Kyburtz. That road is steep and windy for the first few of the 8 miles to Wright's. The road (Ice House Rd) in from about 15 miles west of Kyburtz on US 50 is best if you are towing. No cell reception (there is a 'cell phone hill' with a short hike) and with some sites you can zero in on a TV satellite. Canoeing, kayaking and swiming in the lake is fabulous. Elevation is 7000' so the season is short. July 4th to the end of October or the 1st snowfall. We like August and September as the skeeters are more tolerable then. Reservations are open the weeked after the 4th of July through Labor Day. Sometimes you can get a site during the week days. Weekends are totally full all summer. The campground is US Forrest Service managed.

All of the suggestions so far are great.

When we went to the Rosebowl in January, we stayed at the Malibu beach RV park for a day on the way down. The view was not too shabby...

We've camped all over California, and enjoy the state parks, national parks and especially the national forest campgrounds. We've stayed in most of the sites mentioned and agree they are all wonderful. I'd like to add two spectacular "secrets," not often mentioned:
- Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, with ocean, forest, creek and meadow experiences, and their own elk herd.
- Calaveras Redwoods State Park, with two groves of the largest trees on earth and very nice campsites.

And for a completely different experience, explore Volcanos National Park, with lava tubes and fascinating history.

Particularly if you have kids, Pfeifer Big Sur state park is both gorgeous and fun. It is right on the big sur river - so you are close to beach but also have river and redwood forest options. One of our top favorites to camp in.

Regarding Wrights Lake, it is super hard to get a reservation, especially for a campsite large and flat enough for a trailer. I've camped there on and off the past 20 years, both tent and with a pop-up. Never with a larger trailer. Some sites aren't that level, I've struggled at times to get my pop-up level.

As I recall, the sites closest to the stream are the most level. Stay away from the sites furthest from the stream. The road in, at least the last mile or two is really really bumpy. Unless you drive about 5 mph your trailer will catch some air. Once there it is awesome!

I would recommend a day trip to Wright's to scope it out before towing a trailer to there. There are plenty of level, paved and flat sites. We haven't made reservations for there in years......part in knowing the best days to arrive and part in knowing.......someone.

The snow at Wright's has to melt b'fore you can get in. Last year was a heavy snow....they didn't open the camground until July 23.

Yes, Kirk Creek is great. However not many campsites are trailer friendly. But it is so beautiful that you WILL make it work!

I've been all over California Coast. My hubby was born in Monterey and grew up in Carmel Valley, so hes had the best of both worlds!! Our favorite places to go (and we go every year!) Is to Half Moon Bay, Bidega Bay, Big Sir, Kirk Creek and Joshua Tree National Park

I haven't had the chance to go to Yosemite, but he really wants to take me there, so maybe this year!!

I heard it is beautiful there...

We try and get up to the Oh Ridge campground at June Lake right after Labor Day week end. No hook ups but many of the sites have sit down views of the lake, Twin Falls and Carson Peak. The crowds are gone and you have no problem getting a site even if you just show up without reservations.

There is an RV resort accross the way that has hot showers on the cheap. The little town of June Lake is just down the road and the campground is right off Hwy 395.

The campground is set up in circles so you have elbow room between sites.

We stay they and then do day trips into the Yosemite high country via Tioga Pass Road. Mammoth, Mono Lake, Bodie are some of the local sites in the area.
