Poll: smartphone / iPad / laptop
I wish I knew how to take a formal poll but this will do.
If you could only take one with you on a trip which would it be? (in 50 words or less ;>)

No doubt at all....a laptop. Pretty much everything I do online will involve some typing. In a 25-ft trailer there's no issue storing a 15" laptop. We actually though, have two laptops, one android tablet and one mac iPOD connected through the Verizon Jetpack. We don't even ask about "Internet" at RV parks anymore. TengoNet? - Not.

Why just one? I take the smart phone because that is my phone, the laptop for writing and working, the tablet for reading books and streaming netflix movies.

I just wrote it that way... thinking most people would choose the most important one as the one that would take. Yes I suppose you would take them all if you had them all... Heck take some extra money in case something else is developed while you're gone. :>)

If I had to choose just one, laptop. I go camping to get away from the phone. My tablet doesn't have a built-in blu-ray player. My laptop does.

Just need my iPhone. I can browse (well enough) and stream movies to my flat screen. If you have unlimited data plan don't give it up.
I don't plan to do any typing while camping.

I'd choose an iPad. We have an iMac at home, an HP laptop, an iPad, and a couple iPhones. Unless you need se capability of an application that will only run on a computer-- such As photoshop, excel, or the like, the iPad does most everything you'll need, even printing using AirPrint.
Very simple to use and a lot of really cool apps, many of which you never knew you needed.

Unless I know I have a major project for work that I will need to have access to, we don't even bring a laptop with us anymore. Most everything we need is done on the iPad or the Blackberry (yes, some of use still use those....)

If you get one with data service included, take the iPad. If not, you can do what I do, and use a smartphone, turn it into a wi-fi hotspot, and use the iPad to do any internet stuff.

IPad2 with 3G. Gives me internet anywhere, movies, music, and with a bluetooth keyboard it is everything I need in a laptop. Now....if they would just fix the airforums app...

Laptop and my phone. The phone is a last resort internet device but better than nothing. I use the laptop as an entertainment center as well using Win 7 and Media Center. I can play music or watch movies with a bigger monitor. I can even watch TV from the laptop using a USB tuner. All media is digital now so you don't need a stereo, TV, Ipod, Etc. All you need is an external monitor, a laptop, and some good 2.1 Computer speakers. You can watch TV and movies on the laptop if you want to travel light. Just make sure you get a good laptop (ie not an Acer). Some phones can come pretty close to a laptop with external video capability. The same 2.1 computer speakers will work with the Android phone as well.

I like my laptop, but we won't be making our maiden voyage until sometime this spring so I'm only speaking from car trip experience.

Seriously! I HATE my ipad, limited pictures and memory for such, every time i try to access a video ie flash it won't play it.... And you need a printer that supports AirPrint. Many of the TV shows I watch aren't supported. I'll take my Dell laptop anyday.....

Laptops are so versatile, it's hard to think of not having one available. Of course, it depends on your interests and activities.
In the car, we use Nuvi GPS for nav, and we use a 3G Android tablet for looking up camp sites, geographic tidbits, amusements, local sights, settling arguments, and so on!

Hi, we don't have an I-pad or a smart phone; We have a dumb phone. We bring our lap top or net book so I can document and post "Bob and Lee's random trip" on this forum.

We travel with: MacBook Pro, iPad & iPhone5.....we tether to the iPhone "hotspot" over 4G...when/ where service is available. Works well on the road to access RV sites, rest stops, road cams and the like. Love that they are all compatible....
