Planning the first big trip! Looking for recommendations...
In mid October we will be heading to Jackson Center for some warranty work on our new Globetrotter. After that we intend to start a 6 -7 month road trip to escape winter weather. The only set part is Jan-Mar in San Diego at the Chula Vista RV resort. We'll take a southern route October-Dec. to avoid cold weather, starting in Ohio, working our way south, and then working our way west.
Anyone have any suggestions of must see, must do, or must stay at places?
Thanks,
Steve

Close to Jackson Center is the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum - it's a brilliant visit - Wapakoneta, OH. If you need a local campsite there is a nice but small KOA about 5 mins away.

Turkey Run State Park, along HWY 41 in Indiana, west of Indianapolis, is absolutely outstanding if you like to take a hike while traveling. You will not believe you are in Indiana. The moss and fern laden canyons along the river so incredibly beautiful. There are also tons of large, old growth trees. You can hike along the river rocks without being in peril because the rock is sandstone. You won't slip. I would go 100 miles out of my way to camp there. You won't be disappointed. In the early spring you can also canoe the river. Shades State Park, just a bit northeast of Turkey Run is also beautiful but not quite as dramatic.

We've spent both long and short winter vacations in and near Death Valley NP: the Furnace Creek Campground in the park takes reservations (often a good idea in a National Park) and in the Shoshone RV Park in Shoshone, CA. There are warm springs swimming pools in both places. There is also good dispersed camping in the area, if that suits your camping style.

As you head west, drive along the Gulf Coast and spend some time exploring beautiful, historic, culture-rich Louisiana.
Lots to see and do, great food and music.
Have a great time.

I second the Neil Armstrong museum, and also, about an hour or two south is the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, the largest aviation museum in the world. It covers flight from before the Wright Brothers to the space age and the present. Highly recommended. and you can park your Airstream in the huge parking lot.

Nice camp ground there at Turkey Run. Also believe it when they say the trail can be rugged. They often run the trail through a stream bed in steep gullys. Big outfitter just a little west of the park can hook you up, pick you up with a canoe trip.

While in San Diego, you will love the Chula Vista RV Resort. We have had many friends stay there, and all had an enjoyable time. While here in San Diego, please do not miss the USS Midway, Balboa Park and the Zoo, Seaport Village, Coronado Island and the US Grant Hotel. If you are into golf, 90 miles northeast of San Diego is the little community of Borrego Springs, The Springs at Borrego is one of our favorite RV parks. Happy Travels, Mike

Thanks for all the replies and info. Unfortunately our plans have had to change and we won't be making this trip this year. Also unfortunately Chula Vista RV resort is closing end of January so we will miss our chance to stay there. The Port of San Diego is taking their land so they have to close.
