Overnight stop needed near Nashville area

I'll be traveling from Cincinnati to Gulf State Park Dec 17th. I need an overnight rest stop for 1 night somewhere around Nashville which would be the halfway point. I've never done the "Walmart" overnight and not particularly interested in that. It appears that Tennessee Rest Areas do not allow overnight parking. I'd like to stay as close to I65 as possible and prefer not to unhitch. Any recommendations?

We have family in Nashville* and I bookmarked Henry Horton State Park, but haven't stayed there. It has full hookups for $36. It's a little ways off of I-65.

Otherwise, there are the other usual free overnight stops besides WalMart: some Costcos allow overnight parking and of course Cracker Barrels. We've used both of these in other places with no hassles (check first though). We also have Harvest Hosts, but it's $70 for membership. It seems like a great idea but we haven't used it much because we don't always know our schedule in advance and seems like places fill up by then or not open late.

This thread has a discussion about overnight stops which might be useful.

*Last time we stayed in my brother's driveway, but only 15A service and no breakfast. Dog was friendly though.

We stayed two nights here and found it very convenient to the Interstate/freewy and Grand Ole Opry. https://www.tworiverscampground.com/

This one is slightly more upscale and also nice:

There is a club member who offers courtesy parking near Franklin, TN. That might be a great option.

I can’t say for 100% but I am 99.9999% certain there is a Cracker Barrel in Nashville, and you can park there, have dinner and/or breakfast before you head off. There is a Lambert’s (home of the throwed roll) in Sikeston, Missouri if you head a bit west that has full hookups from what I have been told. Most rest areas do not allow overnight (it is more common as you head west). That said, I remember a drive about 30 years ago and sleeping overnight in my car going to DC somewhere in Kentucky, and other than not sleeping well, I didn’t have a problem. Reality is nobody is checking these rest stops 85% of the time. 15% O crap. The rest, nothing happens.

Why do they call them “rest stops” if that’s not what they are?

Don’t set up camp. Just take a nap…in the RV is fine….then get on down the road if you use a “rest stop”, that is.

Otherwise, yes, a Cracker Barrel or such is a nice thing in a pinch for a 6 or 8 hr rest and a meal at the host. In a dreary falling-asleep drive I once pulled into a church parking lot and took a nap.

We’ve called ahead to an RV dealership whom we’ve bought a few things from…and they had hookups they graciously let us use. BAss Pro Shops also do this. Maybe Cabelas also. We’ve never tried them tho’. We usually just call ahead and reserve a place at a campground or state or fed park.

We’ve also called ahead and rented a cheap motel room… a really cheap one….but slept in our own bed. All we wanted was their parking lot and bathroom. (wink)

Henry Horton SP is a good spot — we’ve stayed there many times. Also, it is south of a bunch of the traffic so it will be an easier exit from Nashville.

We couldn't stay any closer to Franklin this summer than Nashville I-24 CAMPGROUND, SMYRNA, TN. They have music and pizza on the house FRI night. Clean and quiet. https://nashvillei24kampground.com/. Hope this is helpful.

We stayed at a TN rest stop

We asked at a TN rest stop and they said the "no overnight parking" signs are for truckers and they warmly welcomed us. This was a few years back but it might be worth asking.

We've also stayed at Henry Horton (nice) and I-24 (just okay).

Cracker Barrel. Go on Google Map. Look at the street view if you're worried about anything. I've had great luck with them.

Here's an article about it:

Get south of Nashville

I don't think there is ever a good time to drive thru Nashville. It's always a NASCAR qualifying run, or so it seems.

Anyhooo...try to get south of it to avoid the morning inbound traffic. We did and stayed at Stoney Creek Travel Park, 2499 Lynnville Highway, Cornersville, TN. No gas station, convenience store etc, but nice pull thrus, clean restrooms and very easy on and off to I-65.
Safe travels!

If you are a harvest host member I would suggest Sumner Winery in Portland Tenn outside Nashville. Right on interstate so east on and off and you can even opt for a spot with Electric. Great little store with wine and food and gifts.

we spent the night at Cracker Barrel in Nashville, ate breakfast and was on our way. Plan your travel through Nashville to occur on the weekend, leaving on Sunday would be optimal. Driving through Nashville with heavy traffic will add a couple of years to your life
