Outer Banks, NC suggestions

We are looking to possibly plan a trip to the North Carolina Outer Banks for next year. Always been a bucket list place for us, and we've never been so looking for suggestions as far as campgrounds, best time of year, etc. Not really interested in boondocking so we would need hookups.
Thanks!

A lot of this will be dependent on where you want to go and what you want to do. June-August is really busy but obviously the best beach time. Late August it starts to clear out and there's plenty of good weather for the ocean in September. If you want to go fishing then spring and fall are best.

I can't speak to the campgrounds but there is a large campground in Waves/Salvo and ones in Firsco and Hatteras (these are in the island south of Kittyhawk/NagsHead which is much busier and built up.

Thanks.
Would love to go in early fall but also I know that’s peak hurricane season and it seems that area really takes a pounding. Would like to try to avoid the ‘built up’ areas too.

The farther south you go the less built up it gets. When you cross over you are in Kitty Hawk. Turning south it's pretty built up through Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. South Nags Head starts to thin out. Crossing over to the next island it gets less crowded every village all the way south to Hatteras Village. There's a ferry crossing there to Ocracoke, The towns north of Kitty Hawk aren't as crowded either but i don't know if there is camping up there. We did get caught in a hurricane a few years ago in August. Rode it out in the rental house we were in.
