Out of state speeding ticket

I got a 10 over speeding ticket while in UT.

Residing in MI, suppose I never return to UT. Why should I pay it?

Because you have integrity. Where did all those Boy Scout values go?

As I understand it, most states have agreements with each other to put pressure on out of state users who get tickets. Others will know more I am sure. Pay it would be my advice.

Way to shut down the discussion, Ken.

I was hoping to get some firsthand info on whether UT can assess fees, warrants, revoke DL, etc...

Yes, I plan on paying it... just not on their schedule

You may want to read this. I'm not sure of all the implications, but others may know more.

Wow. What happened to the old days when, if you were from out of state, you paid it right then?

Well, not necessarily in Utah, but in Texas anyway.

Use to be you could do this. But know if a state issues a warrant for you it goes into a national registry, not sure if all stars use it though.

"Why should I pay it?"

So much for the age old concept of taking personal responsibility for ones actions.

If you were going 10 over pay it if you weren't fight it.

I would be more worried if they are going to report it to your insurance company.

I tried to.
The statie said 'no'.

So then I drove through Panguitch, the next day, and stopped at the courthouse to pay it. They couldn't find any record of it.

I was thinking maybe a one-percenter paid it for me... then I get a letter in the mail 30 days later, saying I missed my window to dispute, and have defaulted; now owing an extra $50 on the original $90

A couple of years ago I was on my way to Vegas for a trade show and took my wife's van thinking that I could speed without any worries. Wrong! Officer knocked down the original speed which could have resulted in a reckless driving charge. Got home, sent the $90.00 (still the same?) to the address on the ticket. The faster you pay an out of state ticket, the less chance it will show up on your record in your state. My wife picked up a ticket outside of El Centro and it took 21 days to show up in the system. Paid it over the phone with a credit card.

you screwed up!

States can be pretty sloppy in transferring the information to your home state and your home state may be sloppy in adding it to your driving record there. Betting on that can be a mistake. Insurance companies monitor this information and may raise your rates.

The ticket should tell you the consequences of not paying in time. No state is going to extradite you for a traffic violation and it would unusual for a misdemeanor (reckless, DUI, leaving the scene, etc., are usually misdemeanors), but a bench warrant will be issued and if you are ever stopped in Utah they will find it and take you in. You will have to post bail and appear before a judge and pay your fine. If you never go back, you will miss all the spectacular national parks and other things in Utah. It is kind of hard to get to the Pacific coast without going through Utah.

Fighting it is not easy if you live far away, and gets even harder if you miss a date to reply. You could hire a Utah lawyer to fight it, and you might get it reduced to a non-moving violation. That would probably not appear on your driving record and your insurance company would not penalize you, probably.

In Colorado, most courts will accept a plea and reduce to a non-moving violation (muffler violation is the usual charge) if you are not speeding really fast.

I rolled and wrecked and totaled my car and Airstream in Virgina. I never hit a guard rail, sign, or another person. The state gave me a reckless op, that I had to show up at. FWIW I wrote the judge and he deduced it to a $20 fine plus $70 court cost and no points. I still can't believe they gave a a ticket. We could have died, we were hanging upside down and I self rescued all of us.

This comes for a law suit in Springdale UT.(where Zion NP is) They had cops pulling over foreigners and giving them tickets and demanding the money on the spot. Then tearing up the ticket, and pocketing the money once they left.

This is the NUMBER ONE reason I have a radar detector. I have a good one not a $100-$200 one but a $400+ one. There is a huge difference in range. Now they don't work if the police spot shot you with a radar gun. This is why you always have someone in front of you. But they do remind me I am speeding when I don't mean to, and save me when I do speed when I want to.

It's called an "accident" but they give you a ticket for reckless driving. that makes perfect sense

Not necessarily. A one car accident is not usually an accident, but caused by speeding, driving too fast for conditions, bad tires, bad driving or the like. Motor vehicles don't usually roll over without someone doing something wrong. Equipment failure would have to be proved, but bad tires are the responsibility of the driver.

Reckless usually gets reduced to careless driving (the first is a misdemeanor in Colorado; the 2nd a violation, but still a moving violation which affects insurance premiums) if you have a good story.

I got a ticket in Illinois (remember the govenorS) honest. The fine was $100.00 if I mailed it, but $75.00 if I showed up and paid it and there would be NO record of it. The arresting officer told me to tell the judge he would supervise me??? I'm from Iowa and 40 miles from the town I was picked up in.
The town is on I-80 and known to have the largest number of arrests , mostly for drug traffic
