Ouray, CO campground help

I was hoping someone might have a campground recommendation for a campground in the Ouray, CO area.

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Sometimes, using the search function and typing in keywords such as “Ouray”, and other nearby locations can help. Good luck.

I appreciate the suggestion. I went into the advance search before I posted and searched for Ouray in the title of post, but the posts seemed to be related to travel there not campgrounds. I will try again with different parameters and see what I get.

The closest one to town is the KOA - several forest service all around - one is right up the hill that overlooks the town

Thank you Ken, that is probably what I will do, my other consideration is Ridgway State Park.

ghaag, Ridgeway State Park is a great place. Fish, kayak, hike, or anything your heart desires in a beautiful Colorado setting. Been there several times. Po-Co-Chu-Puk campground works great. Have fun. There are oh so many other neat places near Ouray. Our second home is in Durango so we are a little biased.

Curious ghaag, how you plan to get to Ouray. Towing a 30 on certain routes can be sphincter-tightening.

I am open to suggestions. I will be coming from Arkansas, currently planning on taking I-70 out of Denver then south at Grand Junction, CO. A little longer for me, but seemed like a good route.

FYI… when I lived in Denver we avoided getting on 25 going up through the mountains on Fridays or Sundays. The traffic was awful then. That was 5 years ago, but we experienced it again last fall.

I was going to suggest Centennial, about 10 miles south of Montrose.
Ridgway SP has three camping areas, so some are more hilly than others. It's very nice though. While there, take the 42 mile gravel road into the Cimarron Ridge, where True Grit Was filmed. Owl Creek pass and Silver Jack Reservoir, it's beautiful. I was there once (on a dirt bike) and saw real cowboys on horseback corralling cattle!

It is good. From Grand Junction south on US-50 through Montrose and 550 to Ouray. You'll avoid all the curvy mountain roads.
I-70 has a long climb to Vail Pass, but just take your time. There's no need to go 6o mph. On the down side, just keep your speed under control. It's a 7% grade, not scary.

BTW. If you're there in August, look for Olathe' sweet corn for sale everywhere. The best I've ever had. But it doesn't keep for long, so enjoy it.

I can recommend (it's been a while) High Plains Campground, Okley, Western Kansas, and if you want a break at Grand Junction, keep going west about 10 miles to Fruita, and "Colorado Monument" SP? NP? Monument RV park, nice spaces.

In August, the afternoon thunder boomers roll in and the wind can jump up quick. Don't leave your awning out.

Lots of helpful information, thank you! Unfortunately I will be going too late for the corn, but hopefully that means I will miss the storms.

All good info here. Take a drive over Red Mountain W/O your trailer. Avoid if you have a fear of heights.

There's so much to do in that area, I used to stay a month, and still hated leaving. Every direction is different and all beautiful.
It's been years but we went (by motorcycle ) to see Joe Cocker's home in Crawford, and ate at his wife Pam's "Mad Dog Cafe" and got a tour of the room with all the gold records.
Then tried to bike across Imogene Pass from Ouray until we scared ourself too much. Then did a jeep tour over the pass. 13,114'.
Road was created for mules to supply the mines in the 1880's. Pretty much one lane hard packed dirt with eye-popping drop offs.

When in Grand Junction, two things cannot be missed. Park the trailer. Drive up to Colorado National Monument. Drive around the upper loop or hike the rim from the Visitors Center. Spectacular Scenery.
If you are there towards the end of September, you must drive up the Grand Mesa. The Aspens will be in their shivering, golden glory. You will see spectacular color, eye candy!!
