Small hamburgers sold at White Castle, a chain in the NYC area and some other cities in the northeast and midwest US. They suggest you "buy 'em by the sack". When I was a kid, my father and I would sneak off to get a sack and I ate most of them. They weren't called "sliders" in those days. I guess they are supposed to slide down your throat, but they aren't that small.
I have reformed and no longer eat things like that, but the memories are still vivid and comforting.
I have noticed the US version of Boston Pizza now sells "sliders". Generally the food at "Boston's" in the US isn't as good as the Canadian (and original) version.

Aha! For a few minutes, I was thinking that sliders had something to do with baseball.
Clearly not the case! Enjoy!

"Sliders" - another great memory:

As a youngster while underway on active duty in the USN, we always referred to sliders as those weird square shaped burgers the cook would provide for us 24/7. As the ship would pitch, roll, and generally move around during rough seas, the burgers would SLIDE around on the griddle - hence, the term, "SLIDERS." It was rumored that the vintage of these burgers goes back to WWII - frozen for decades and thawed-out for taste treats in the 70's. Nothing like a greasy Slider in the wee hours of the morning when you couldn't sleep...
I'm sure the USN term was referencing White Castle gut bombs!

White Castle started in 1921 in Wichita. I know they were all over NYC in the '40's. The burger came frozen and were put on a griddle. They had holes punched in them so they would cook fast and thoroughly. Then while cooking they sprinkled diced onions on them, warmed the square buns, and then put it all together and into the box. Richard has a photo of one a few posts up, but the box looked a bit different years ago. I watched this process as a kid scores of times. They were kinda greasy and 4 bites, each sliding down your throat, and it was time to get another out of the sack.

IN and OUT: Yeah give me a Double, Double and a chocolate shake anytime over any number of White Castle's. Not trying to start a fight, but when he said In and Out, I couldn't resist drooling.
