I agree with LDM. The stretch of Highway 49 for about 30 miles south of Jackson is pretty rough. But if you do end up on on that section, I recommend Jerry’s Catfish. I Natchez, I like The Camp for burgers and beer and the Under Hill Saloon next door had good live music. I also like the Cotton Alley Cafe. Of course lots of beautiful houses to visit and enjoy. Longwood is my favorite since it was never finished. For the return trip, you might consider heading south to New St Francisville for more plantation house and then Baton Rouge to Slidell to I-10. Or cross the river in Baton Rouge to River Road and its plantation houses down to LaPlace and hitting I-10 there. Of course, that all assumes you have the time and are heading home not continuing on.
