Not a weight question, but a cast iron travel question

So there are lots of posts on cooking with cast iron on the road, which I totally get. I am not asking about where to store for weight....I can figure that out the same way I do canned goods, beer and wine....
What I am wondering is how do folks travel with their cast iron having the coating of oil that is recommended for non stick without getting smuts all over things? I can totally store my cast iron at home very well but looking for on the road solutions?
Thanks to all.

We put ours in the oven with a towel wrapped around it.

We save the mailing pouches from Amazon, etc. I nest the set in a milk crate, which rides in the truck bed because most cooking is done outside.

My skillet just rides in a pots and pan drawer. Dutch oven has a nylon case/bag.

NICE....I like the ideas. Something I haven't seen on the forums before. It will be interesting to see what everyone does. I knew where to go. A bit surprised how fast the response is but thank you.

We both have a 2007 and you have a pots and pan drawer? I do not. Interesting. I am most concerned about containing the residual oil on the pan.
The oil spreading is my concern, not where I place the weight....I can manage that.
Thanks to all responding so quickly thus far.

Paper grocery sack.

After we clean up from the meal we oil with flax oil. We wipe any residual oil before we put them in their grocery sack.

We just bought some waxed canvas bags with drawstrings so we'll see how the travel in those.

I have a 10.25" cast iron pan that I leave in the oven during transport so it doesn't get any oil on anything. Not on the grate but on the sheet metal above the burner. I'd be curious if anyone has done this and regretted it?

Not a weight question, but a cast iron travel question

I use my newly acquired simple sewing machine skill to sew cotton sacks with drawstrings for storing pots and pans. Hey, how about using yesterdays newspaper, do people still buy them? Good for cleaning windows too.

I have the Lodge carry bags for my Dutch Ovens, and some dish towels folded and seamed on all but one side to slip items into that need to be kept clean and protected from rattle.

Easy to wash the towels when needed, and they make very durable covers.

I'd be more concerned with the volume of discarded waste generated by cleaning the cast iron, than storage.
Look for carry bags for cast iron. I once visited "Sportsman's Warehouse" and purchased a sturdy round zipper bag, which I used for audio cables, not cast iron.

Plastic grocery bag under the bed. I think it likes it under there.

What waste? Cast iron requires very little cleaning. Plastic scraper and a paper towel which then becomes a fire starter. So much less waste than washing a non stick pan with dish soap.

I agree, very little waste. I clean my iron skillet and pots by liberally sprinkling Kosher salt and rubbing/wiping with a paper towel, rinsing with clean water and wiping dry. I also spray lightly with Pam or olive oil if needed. Don't use soap unless you are preparing to re-season. I use my microwave for clean dry goods storage, so iron cookware goes in drawer under fridge. This drawer is not much good for anything else, can be dusty. Many also store the iron in the back of the truck in a basket or tote because of weight and concerns about oil spots. Whether you store under the fridge or in the back of the truck, remember to rinse off the dust before use.

Though a bit commercial there are some great "bags" that fit Dutch Ovens and Fry Pans. I have one for my 10" & 12" DOs and one for a 11" FP (alas none for my 8" DO). These protect the pans - heavy cordura, a bit of padding, waterproof and strong carrying handles.
They are made by several different manufacturers (Camp Chef, Campmaid, Sportsmans Warehouse, Cabelas...)

I put my cast iron pan in a canvas tote bag under the sink. Keeps pan oils and such contained. Right there when you need it.

Cast Iron Cover

When we used cast iron, simple grocery paper bag did the trick. Now we use Le Creuset skillets and pots. Cast iron with enamel coatings. 100 percent non stick. Don’t want use them on an open fire, but could with a generous coating of dishwashing soap on the exterior. Would never convince the “Better Half” of that though. LOL.
