Niagara Falls

Ok, Ernie and I can't go to Georgia for the International Rally and we are looking at going to Niagra Falls, June 30th - July 4th; Anyone ever been that can make recommendations on where to stay on the American side and other than the falls any sites must see?

Anyone interested in joining in?

Both areas are gorgeous. BTW, I thought you were going to International in 2007?

I just can't do the deep south in the summer with no installed AC.... So we have been discussin other options.

Don't think we can join up on those dates, but we're looking to come back home from the west next summer through Niagara Falls and we'd be really interested in any campground recommendations for the area.

We have gone to Sunset RV in Oswego a couple times, It is awesome. Not big, not small. 150 from the lake! Icecream stand accross the street, Fish Fry just down the road. Spotted an Argosy on a walk one afternoon in some ones yard

Want to go there next year!

Ellen & I made the trip to the Falls last year, we stayed at a KOA on Grand Island ( http://www.koa.com/where/ny/32101/ ) which was fairly well situated. They have a tour bus company that stops there, which I would recommend for your first trip. It crosses into Canada, so you might need passports next year. The tour includes both sides of the falls, and the Maid of the Mist boat ride.

I would also highly recommend the jetboat tour (http://www.niagarafallslive.com/niag...l_jetboat_.htm ) if you are up to it, you will get wet!

Finally, take an evening and visit the Anchor Bar in Buffalo ( http://www.anchorbar.com/ ), home of the original Buffalo Wings. Wings are the main course, if you order an entree such as steak, it is a side dish to the wings.

The trip is 500 miles from NH, and takes about 8 hours.

We will probably go again this year, my kids saw our pictures and they want to organize a family trip.

We've stayed in a campground in October of 1994 on the Canadian side (in a tent but it had FULL HOOKUPS ). I remember crossing the Rainbow Bridge then paralleling the river to the right and the campground was on the left about 5 miles. I would have to look it up - but he campgrounds were real nice. Very close to all the attractions. really enjoyed Canada - even if it was less than a mile from the US side. From what I remember - there were plenty of signs as you crossed over pointing to the campgrounds.

LoydBonifide/Keith. Thanks you for your input. We purchased our 67GT in July and spend time "adjusting". Now we think Aira Ruscello is ok to travel.
In New York State, nice to have all this information to attractions close by.

We ended up staying in a KOA on the American side. As it ended up this was the trip where the Canadian boarder folks decided that my wife, I, and my 10 year old son looked suspicious, when we crossed over for a day trip. They asked me to park my van, sit in a nearby area and then they proceeded to dump everything out, including my tool case, glove boxes etc. Bottom line we had to put everything back before we went on. I was glad I wasn't towing at the time. Who knows what shape the trailer would have been in.

It pretty much soured me from ever towing over the border.

I had a friend, who is a long haired hippy type, who practically had his car disassembled at the border heading up to BC. And they really do leave it for you to put back together. I admit I am a little leary of taking my trailer across the border. What if they wanted to look in the bellypan or something?

I guess three people, big passenger van set off the red lights for me. What was so frustrating was the fact that they just dumped things. No respect about the order you keep things in etc. You know you can open things up take it out and then put it back? I shudder thinking about how much time they would spend on dumping out the contents of my trailer. Then the time we would spend putting it back together.

Sandi and I stayed at the Niagra Canada KOA on our way out to Yellowstone in Spetember. Nice place to spend a few nights for sure and the Canada side of Niagra was a riot. I had no idea of what to expect. We stayed for two night and three days on our way to Detroit and had lots of fun! The camp ground was close to town and once in town we walked everywhere. USe you debit card whenever you can and avoid currency exchange. On the smaller priced stuff they charged you the same wether USA or CAN.

That's funny - well not really. I had a gun - very little problem - they held it but it was no real issue. My biggest problem was getting back into the US - not the gun - THE DOG was the big issue. Canadian side is MUCH MUCH better and has lots to do.

Jack, I'm sure that it was a random event. Here's my story which I hope will make you feel better about towing over the border. My husband and I were traveling thru Niagara Falls with our Bambi and decided to stop and take a look at the falls. Well, we had heard that the view from the Canadian side was more spectacular so we towed the Bambi over the border for a total of four hours. On our way back, US customs asked us what was going on (apparently they had a record that we had just crossed over four hours ago) and I proceeded to tell them the truth -- that we were just passing thru and wanted to see the falls, and that we heard the view was better in Canada, blah, blah, blah. And guess what? They waved us through with nary a second glance.

My Mom lived in the Falls for years. The American side, I hate to say, is pretty dumpy! Downtown Niagara Falls is now one big casino. Niagara-on-the Lake is quite nice, up towards Lewiston and on up to Lake Ontario. The Canadian side offers better views of the American Falls, the power plants, and the whirlpool and rapids.Take the ride over the whirlpool in the Spanish Aerocar(cable car) unless you're subject to queezyness!! While in New York, visit the Cave of the Winds(bottom of the American Falls), hike out to Goat Island, and just enjoy the scenery. Summer months are always jammed with tourists. I would seek out reservations early.
Having been raised in that area, that's where we always went on a cheap date. The American falls used to be pretty spectacular before the last big slide and rockfall back in the late 50's(if I remember correctly).
Enjoy Niagara and stay away from barrels!!!!

Hi Sarah,
We also stayed at the Grand Island KOA. It's nice. We were there the pass spring. In the Finger Lakes westayed at the Watkins Glen/ Corning KOA. which is very nice. Reservations for Watkins Glen (800) 562 7430.
When you go into Canada take your Passports with you. Passports work better than Birth certificates when coming back into the States.

It's been a couple of years since I was there last, but I had no trouble crossing the border in either direction. The Canadians wanted to see the vaccination certificate for the dog, the Americans were concerned with how much beer I was bringing home. No big inspection, no one even looked in the Airstream. The Grand Isle KOA doesn't rate really high (depending on what source you use) but it's clean and safe and convenient. FWIW, there is a Topp's supermarket a couple of miles down the road (back toward Buffalo) that has a pizza oven in the deli - they make a buffalo wing pizza that's out of this world.
