Newby Snow Bird

Hi Folks,

Randy and I are virgin snow birders. We are hopefully heading to Mesa, AZ sometime in the middle of December for 4 months. Just wondering if anyone has some suggestions for a good route from Saskatoon at that time of year. Google Maps has us going through Montana and Utah. What can we expect in terms of weather and especially snow at that time of year.

Thanks as always for some great information.

So jealous! I'd look for a route that doesn't have so many mountains for December. It all depends on the weather but a longer Midwestern route my be better than going through mountain passes. It all depends on how fast you want to get there but if you came by KC there is an extra bedroom for y'all.

To answer your question, you can expect just about anything as far as weather at that time of year. I would stay out of the Rockies and head due south to Albuquerque and then decide whether to head east to Flagstaff/Phoenix or continue south to Las Cruces and Tucson to avoid chance of snow. Staying on the Interstates is the safest as they get the most plowing.
