As was said earlier in the thread, week days shouldn't be a problem. Weekends might be a little tricky. Many State parks (MA,NH,ME,VT) have sites they don't put out for reservations you might find even a "FULL" park has a site or 2. MA parks list these sites as "Management" sites, but they fill them on a first come - first serve process.
Late Sept color starts north and in the mountains first (VT,NH,ME) - MA won't see peak till Columbus day week.
I will let you know if winging it works. We are heading to the Cape for a week and then leaving North to go up the coast if all goes well. We do have reservations for the cape however we will be on the fly for the rest of the trip.

We also enjoy "tumbling" as we travel. For what it's worth, we've done New England in the fall, chasing fall colors, twice in the last three years (each three to four weeks) and were entirely successful with accommodations. We start looking for a campground online (cell phone) about an hour before we want to stop and we search in a 50 mile radius. We call then and ask for a site. I'm pretty sure we never made more than one call each day. (Note, we stayed outside of Acadia - we knew it would be full.) Of course, if we liked a place or the area or the price of a lobster dinner, we'd wander over to the office the next morning and ask for another day.
I live in Maine and I can assure you there are open spots during the peak leaf peeping season. However that doesn't mean it won't be crowded in the more frequented areas. Acadia National Park might be a problem, if you want to be in one of the National Park campgrounds. The new Schoodic Woods campground in Schoodic Pennulisula part of the park is currently completely booked through when it closes in October, although grabbing a cancellation is possible. I would recommend reservations if you are planning on staying in the more popular placed
