New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
Thinking of extending our Maine tour into NB and Nova Scotia. Any recommendations on how best to spend 7 days in that region? Any issues plugging an Airstream into Canadian power outlets in RV parks? Thanks!

Live in Lubec, Maine on coast as far Downeast as USA goes, so we see Canada every sunrise. No issues with Canadian plugs & Maritimes are priceless. The people, communities, culture is awesome. We enjoy much time from Fundy NP to many aspects of NS & especially enjoy Cape Breton & not to forget PEI which is another wonder.

We live in Nova Scotia. There are lots of great things to see in this province and the provincial campgrounds are really top notch. Halifax is the only largish city (and a small one at that) and if you are interested in seeing Halifax, you could stay at Porter's Lake campground which is not only close to the city but is also close to excellent beaches. From Halifax, you could explore the quaint fishing villages of the "South Shore", like Lunenburg, Mahone Bay & Liverpool. Thomas Raddell campground is an excellent campground along that route. Heading inland, you could camp at Keji National Park, which offers hiking, biking and paddling opportunities. You can also head toward the Annapolis Valley and explore the beautiful little town of Wolfville and spend a day touring the many wineries in the area. You could also head to the opposite side of the Bay of Fundy to explore the Economy/Parrsboro shoreline - there is a wonderful campground there called Five Islands Provincial Park where you can experience the tides and even dig for clams. If you head as far as Cape Breton Island, you might be interested in the town of Baddeck and the Cabot Trail. Be aware that you will be driving through some windy roads and fairly steep ups and downs of the highlands there.
We also love Prince Edward Island. Our favourite places to camp there are the two national parks on the central north shore: Cavendish and Stanhope. Our favourite activities there are biking, kayaking, hiking the miles of beaches and eating the seafood. PEI is a very quiet quaint place and we love it!

Make a stop and see Bay of Fundy the tide changes 30 to 52 feet every six hours. Take the ferry over to PEI then drive back on the bridge. We love PEI and would go back in a heartbeat. Nice friendly folks.

We went to Cape Breton last summer, it is well worth the trip, especially if you have 7 days, having been there/done that, I would recommend staying here Cheticamp, we did not, we stayed on the other side and as mentioned earlier the roads can be EXTREME when towing, basecamping from this spot without trailer would work out great. Just know that it takes a long time to go anywhere, speeds are slow. If traveling to PEI, know how much the bridge will cost to get over..

We were just talking about a trek to the northeast to see New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia. What would be the recommended time of the year to visit. I was looking at the fall time frame.

We are big advocates of fall travel in the Maritimes, as the falls here tend to be very nice weather-wise. PEI especially is very busy in the summer but a lot of touristy things close down at the end of the summer, making the fall much quieter. Cavendish National Campground remains open through September and is a beautiful venue for ocean side camping. PEI also holds a province wide "Fall Flavours" food event throughout the month of September, with classes & events that the public can participate in.
Nova Scotia is also a beautiful province to visit in the fall. The waterfront in Halifax is busy with cruise ships throughout September and October, so there is lots to see there. The rest of the province also enjoys the beautiful fall weather well into October. It's a great time of year to visit the apple orchards, pumpkin farms and wineries in the Annapolis Valley.
We haven't spent a lot of time in New Brunswick, but we know that the Provincial and National campgrounds are open throughout September and at least up to the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.
Hope this will entice you to come explore our beautiful ocean playground!

Has anyone taken the ferry from St. John to Digby. According to the website they charge $9/ft. Is that really true. At a total length of 45ft that's expensive.

What Bob says in #5. You'll LOVE the town of Alma, NB. Go to the local bakery for fresh delights, and visit the store "Moosing Around".

What would be the advantage, other than time, in taking the ferry vs enjoying the drive?

Be sure to drive Down to the Bay Of Fundy and watch the tide change over 40 feet. Yup I said 40 feet. We stayed in Moncton and took a day trip down and watched the tide. Visit the Titanic museum and graveyard in Halifax. Learn about the largest man made explosion before the atomic bomb that happen in the bay at Halifax, citadel in Halifax, if you have time take the ferry from Pictou to PEI just north of New Glasgow it’s free going to PEI then drive the bridge back that will cost you but not bad for what get.

There are a lot of Titanic buffs around.

We did the trip up to Nova Scotia this year at the beginning of summer. Spent a month in the area.
We ended up taking the ferry, very expensive. Exchange rate does work in your favor but I would say to skip on it. The drive isn’t too bad from Maine to Halifax — if you have an option to take the ferry from south shore back to bar harbor, that is the trip I would recommend and it saves you a full day of driving.
If I remember correctly, it was a 6 hour drive from the bay of fundy to the border crossing. Definitely hit Halifax, 3 days in the area should be plenty of time to see everything including Peggy’s cove and other tourist spots. Definitely do cape Breton and the Cabot trail, you can make it to the trail in one day. Stay overnight and do the trail the next day. It’s a 2 - 3 hour loop. If you do stops that means it’s gonna take you a full day to drive around it especially if you go north and see meat cove. Fort Louisberg was another cool spot, again, a few hours to a full day can be spent here. We spent 3 hours and could have done more but needed to drive back towards PEI that same day.
Bay of Fundy has tidal bore rafting. Only place in the world you can do it. We also found an incredible camp ground in Nova Scotia, I’ll attach the photo below. Tides are about 35 ft twice a day. Tide pushes out close to 1/4 of a mile at its lowest point and at the highest point it surrounds the camp ground on three sides. We loved this camp ground and would love to refer you to the owners there if you can fit in the time. We planned 3 days at this camp ground and ended up staying 2 weeks. Lovely town and $7/lb lobster Canadian dollars so that’s about $5 American.
Can go into so much more detail. Let me know if you have questions! We loved it up there.

twin shores campground in PEI is the best RV we ever stayed at
two beaches to chose from
they have both open and wooden area. your choice.
be sure to take the bridge over, the bridge toll is 1/3 the ferry cost. as well the ferry does not allow trailers during daytime hours in the summer

Don’t forget New River Beach Provincial Park, Bay of Fundy National Park, and the Rockwood Park campground in St. John (yup, right in the city). All in New Brunswick, each one great.
