Hello OTRA 15: I could not find any info on daily passes on the Nat Park website. Lilly and Me referred my to recreation.gov where I read that passes will be required for Yosemite and Sequoia starting May 21. We will be there a week earlier than that. Way too much work to keep a park website informative and up to date.

And as posted here, calling is of little use. You are lucky if you get a real person who can answer your question. It is similar to calling Medicare with a question, or same with IRS. When customer satisfaction isn't a factor for success, behavior changes.

So we shall see what happens.

David

On the Yosemite website, if you scroll down a bit there is a big section entitled “Park Entrance Requires Reservations”.

https://www.nps.gov/yose/index.htm

Clicking on the link, it tells you the when and how to make a reservation.

This seems to be Covid related, where I thought these were crowd size related, but it could be both.

I don’t see the same thing for Sequoia, but may have missed it.

Due diligence will definitely be required for the big parks this year.

On edit, a half dozen NP’s, apparently: https://www.cntraveler.com/story/the...ns-this-summer

Looking for a GTSR pass for mid July. We are outside the 60 day window, but sounds like LILY&ME was able to buy a ticket on rec.gov. So the question is what time of the day do they release tickets online. Been trying to figure out how to game the system; but I never have seen any tickets available even on the 60th day out?

We are going within the 60 day window, and I got online right when ticket sales opened.

The website will tell you exactly when, date and time, you can begin buying tickets for the dates you want.

Be there then.

Thanks again Lily and Me: I'm thankful the link you posted does say the same thing as rec.gov. No daily passes required until May 21. We plan on being there a week before. Mark my words, they will decide they are too crowded and won't let us in.

The pandemic has quieted down in California so that may be in our favor.

Well, I hope that doesn’t happen to you, particularly since we’re talking just a couple of weeks from now.

Travel may have permanently changed, is the truth.

But I read the vaccination if darn effective. We've been vaccinated and feel much safer in the grocery store or barber shop. But crowd control may very well be in place for a long time. Not airports or airliners mind you, but parks and nightclubs and the like. Covid is no good for a grandpa like me. And I play it safe.

Sadly, David - the one thing about the NPS is that they do not modify very much, their "national" standards regarding how Parks handle visitors - which are not based on the local areas where the parks are located. This is because they are a federal agency (so very much adher to the CDC/Federal "standards") and the give local park superintendents little latitude in how they adjust those standards. Thus, even though Montana is pretty much "open" with few restrictions they are still operating as if it's last year. Thus, shuttle buses have seats removed and much reduced capacity.

Regarding Glacier - if it is anything like last year, they based when their closures at the entrances, on the parking spaces at key points well within the Park. For example, on the west side, if the Avalanche parking was full, the stopped traffic at first, Lake McDonald (about 5 miles away) and then (if it stayed congested) at the foot of Lake McDonald (only 1 & 1/2 miles inside the West Entrance, but 12-14 miles from Avalanche). On the east side, it is easier to get to Logan Pass but they manage traffic on the way there as well at Sun Point and Jackson Glacier overlook. It can be very frustrating!

Go early in the day and get as far as you can, as early as you can. Good luck!

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of that email, as there is a pdf document attached that is your actual pass and will have to be scanned.

I saved mine to Acrobat and then the Cloud, so that I’ll be able to open it on my phone at the gate even if I don’t have internet access.

Hi there ORTA15: Yep, we are 1000 miles from home. Currently we're in Lake Tahoe RV park, in amongst BIG ponderosa pines. The campground is not too crowded, maybe 60% full. Next weekend on to Yosemite. I met a vintage Airstreamer here who has a beautiful 76 Overlander 27'. He is a California native and said the east side of the Sierras are much more scenic than the west side. Live and learn. We have reservations so we'll stick to the plan for now.

People were masks indoors and some outdoors. When in Rome, we follow suit.
